  • Lifter Problems?

My engine ticks. Usually louder when its cold but when I start the car there is this odd ticking comming from the driverside. It only lasts for a while though, once the engine warms up, it goes away. I looked under the hood and I found a nut on the heat shield had broken off of the bolt.

i.e. The heat shield sits on top of the nuts that hold the headers to the engine. Another nut goes on top of that to keep the heatshield from falling off. The outer most nut has broken off with a piece of the bolt. Lame huh?

Anyways, I did a search on here and I found that ticking = piston slap or dying lifters. Seeing that I do not have a LS1 ( 02 3.8L Camaro 80k, oh boy you didn't want to see what insurance would have been on a LS1 ) that rules out piston slap. So it is either my lifters going bad or this stupid heat shield stuff. However, I doubt it is the heat shield because of the fact that it doesn't seem to vibrate/knock against anything when I revv the engine. Which leaves bad lifters for the only problem left.

Lifters are right around the pushrods/springs/all that junk correct? If not, please correct me.

So, I guess that i'd have to tear apart the heads and replace the lifters. Which seems like a waste to me without replacing/upgrading my springs/rocker arms/valves/stuff like that. Do you guys recommend any parts/companies taht make this stuff. I know there are quite a few out there, I just don't know who makes quality parts that don't break.

I'm kind of new to engine internals, so you'll have to excuse me if I seem like an idiot.

My advice. A lifter is a very inexpensive part, and and annoyance because of the noise they make. But the breakdown on getting to a lifter is horrendous. Try puting some Marvel Mystery fluid in your oil, give it a few weeks and see if it goes away. Its worked many times before for many of my customers.

      Re: Lifter Problems?

i was getting a ticking from the very front of my engine, held a pipe to it, and couldnt find a tick anywhere. So I was thinking it could be an injector or a bad lifter (probably from coolant). I really really dont think its the injectors though.

Cheap parts are always buried and expensive ones are always easy to get at.

I have the same problem and I def want to know what I should upgrade if I do have the lifters changed. My car is almost done with a custom turbo kit so I want anything I can get to compliment it. Any recomendations for me as well?

same issue, thanks on the Marvel idea, kinda spaced that one out I'll give it a shot here in the next few days when i change my oil again. Hopefully its a lifter and not a main bearing....

same problem here, spoke to a few gm service techs yesterday hey told me to change the oil, but to use 4 quarts of oil and 1/2 quart of tranny fluild, drive for 500-1000 miles and change again. problem should be solved. a little hesitent about this but was told by them that the tranny fluid is basically a very low weight oil with a very high concentration of detergents that will clean oil passages that have become blocked, and it is a common procedure they do, with no ill effects. will give progress report after its done

I had a lifter ticking problem when I bought my car last summer, went away after a few oil changes and haven't had a problem since.

Lifters arent to hard to replace. Can easliy be done in a day.

I always had a ticking noise in my engine. Ended up being a wrist pin! ouch....

Check the exhaust manifold gaskets first.
They make a deceivingly metallic ticking like noise when they have small leaks.

If I do go ahead and have the top of my engine opened up what other parts are in there that I can upgrade since my car is almost done with the turbo? Anybody have recommendations of what I might want to look at upgrading while they are in there? Thanks

                        Re: Lifter Problems?

what would be a good recommendation on upgraded/performance lifters?
                        OE-Rs?
How does a lifter get damaged?
If you climb to 3000 rpms and the lifter sound is too loud. Is that a lifter or could it be something else?
My friend's car starts being really loud around 3000 rpms.
This car has been beaten on a little bit.
