    Compression...

    This is the compression we recorded in my '98 3.8 today:

    Cylinder 1: 125
    Cylinder 3: 165
    Cylinder 5: 175

    Cylinder 2: 180
    Cylinder 4: 185
    Cylinder 6: Not Recorded

    After re-diagnosing it, It sounds like the sound (knocking) is coming from the odd-numbered bank. We're hoping the problem is just a messed up valve, but there's the possibility of it being a connecting rod or something... Any new ideas?

    How the hell does this happen after only 55,000 miles. What the hell..

    how many times did you turn it over? those are some weird numbers

      i ran a compression test on mine not too long ago and those look like some familiar numbers.

        those are some ****ed up numbers. 125 on one side and 180 on the other? even if one side was in the 160-170 range and the other side was in the 180 range it would still indicate somethign was going on.

          Put some oil in each cylinder at TDC and do the test again. That will tell you if its the rings. Other than that, most likely it's bad valves.

            I think we may have figured out the problem. I'll give an update later whether or not we're right..

              Nope, that wasn't it.

              We're taking the heads off tomorrow. That should hopefully show us what's going on.

              Does this seem strange to you though: Cylinder 1 is low on compression and it looks like the air outlet thing for Cylinder 1 in the Lower Intake Manifold is much cleaner than all the others (all the others are dark brown and the one for cylinder 1 is a golden color). Ultimately, my dad wants the engine pulled anyway and new gaskets on EVERYTHING, but we don't have a cherry picker and he'll probably pay some shop to take it out and do the oil pan gasket. Besides, who knows if we'll need to mess with the crank/connecting rods/pistons at all anyway? It's anybody's guess at this point, until we take off the heads..

                Almost positive this is the solution: a messed up wrist pin on Cylinder One's connecting rod... ;)

                  Definitely a rod bearing. That thing is torn to hell!
