Ok, you know how at the top of the cylinder walls there is supposed to be a ridge? Well mine dont have any... Are my pistons traveling to far or whats up? Is that a v8 only thing?

      Re: cylinder wall ridges

The ridge in your cylinder walls is a naturally occuring phenomenon of most engines. The ridge is the part of the cylinder wall that doesn't get worn away by the piston rings as they travel up and down.

The pistons SHOULD go all the way up. The ridge is created by the piston rings. Since the top ring sits, what, 1/4" below the top of the piston, the ridge will start about a 1/4" from the deck of the block.

Have your engine internals ever been worked on? Replaced pistons/rings, cylinder bore/hone? A lot of shops/mechanics will use a ridge reamer to remove the ridge(and you'll pretty much have to do it to get the pistons out from the top). That might explain why you don't see one.

Keep in mind the ridge isn't very noticable. You can run the tip of your fingernail inside the cylinder wall, and you should feel it catch at about 1/4" from the top.

no, never in this engine's short life has the internals ever been worked on until I work on it tomorrow(I'm pulling it today).
It's just weird seeing my cylinder walls with ABSOLUTELY NO RIDGE at all, not even a little bit, and then seeing my friend's 302 with a HUGE ridge (but his has 130k miles, mine is 30k).
        Thanks!

You're right. The presence of a ridge gets more pronounced the longer the engine has been run. The lack of a ridge on your engine is due to the low miles it has.

Good luck with the ring swap.

Why are you digging into an engine with only 30K miles on it?

what did you do to cause that and did you find that out by using the oil trick? ;)

                  Re: cylinder wall ridges

I had compression of 80-100 at the max. It was a fresh head gasket that I just put on. The engine died by itself. The oil was startin to look yogurty.
So I put oil in the cylinders and immediately my compression jumped up.
So OBVIOUSLY its the Rings. dam it

It was caused by: a coolant leak of pressure, turned into a blown head gasket, a blown head gasket turned out to be bad piston rings (and there might be worse damage) on an engine thats a 2002 only 33k miles.
Also I was running very lean do to P&P TB that was not recalibrated. (Now, I have HPT PRO and am ready to recalibrate).
I dont really know what I'm doing changeing the rings, but the haynes has like 10 pages on it. soooo much inspection/checks.
