I am calling a iron block, like mine which was bored out, weaker then a stock bore iron 3.8.. and you dont think iron blocks crack or break?? How come a stock block 5.0 mustang pushing 500 or more HP with a fully built motor breaks blocks?? They are iron.. I have seen 2 3.8 GM motors crack the block.. One was a fully built GTP bored out, and the other was a 10 second GN.. Will it happen to every motor?? No..

true, but a car that is all top end with a broken con-rod isnt going to make any hp.

I agree.. stock connecting rods are pretty stout!! Now the stock pistons break.. I broke one with 313rwhp and 433rwtq!! But the stock bottom end lasted 2 years on the bottle and 65 bottles through it!!

How come no one has brought up the transmission yet? sure you can run it into the 11's but with a stock transmission and TC, you arent going anywhere but the back end of a tow truck. And you will be there in half the time with manual.

I dont think the guy who started this thread knew what he was getting into...

Re: Replacing internals for performance and rebuild

I'm not saying forged parts are a waste of money by any means. In 1998silverbirds case, the lighter pistons freed up some hp and allowed him to rev faster which was a benefit. The extra cost of the forged parts were worth the money to him. However if I'm going to build a slightly modified street engine making a few ponies more than stock just to go cruising, I think the money could be spent elsewhere where it could do more good like a free flowing exhaust. I feel forged parts would be overkill here.

I'm going to rebuild my 350 in my 69 camaro at the end of the summer. I don't live near a track, so its strictly a street car. Right now it has a stock cast crank, stock rods, cast pistons with crappy 76cc iron heads. I'm going to put on a set of Trickflow 62cc aluminum heads and a new cam with .480/.494 lift and 228/234 duration at .050. I should be making around 425-450 hp depending on whether or not I stroke it. Even with this upgrade, a cast crank would still handle the power so upgrading to 4340 forged crank is overkill unless I plan to use Nos etc. In my situation, I don't need high dollar forged 4340 cranks since that would be overkill. From a cost perspective, a cast crank cost around 200 and forged cranks range anywhere from 500 to a couple of grand. I can't see spending over $1000-1500 for a lunati or crower crank in my situation, but to each his own. Some people are willing to use the best no matter what and thats fine too.
