Which way does piston go?

If your pistons dont have a notch, to indicate which way goes towards the front of the engine. How would you know which direction to place the piston?
Does it matter? I just dont wanna throw it off balance.

you saying there is no indicator like a dot, notch, arrow, nothing? and im guessing you didnt mark them huh? ;)

did you replace the crank, rod bearings? if not, you could look at the scores in them to try and match them up.
