    Hey all,

I'm looking into replacing my standard camshaft with a performance one. I'm thinking of replacing the whole thing around it, not just the cam, it also doesn't necessarily have to be street legal so basically i'm looking at a maximum power boost..

Here's what I found and caught my attention the most :

    http://performance.drivewire.com/get...e%20Components

I'm basically looking at the 2nd in the list - part number 50140SBALUN

    Those are the specs :
    ---------------------
    Lunati Camshaft
    Pontiac Firebird Camshaft

Fits: 1993 to 1995 Pontiac Firebird
    Brand: Lunati
    Notes: 4/7 Swap Camshaft; Solid Roller Series Grind; Small Base; RPM Range 4400 - 7800; Valve Lift; Intake 0.640; Exhaust 0.645;
    ---------------------

It seems to me they only sell the cam, but not a whole kit.. so that's a bit of a problem on it's own I guess, but besides that, the cam seems to be quite extreme. Intake .64 and Exh .645 !

Does anybody have info on this part or any experiences to share ? Any clues on what could be the expected power gain ?

    Cheers !

Hey man I have been thinking of the samee upgrade. If you plan on switching from fuel injection to a carb you will be fine. But because 3.4 is speed density setup you will probably have alot of problems making it run on efi. If you want efi try somethin smaller. Crane's compu cam 2030 is garunteed to work with the efi but its a little small 1500-4500 rpm comp cams also have grinds. But that is the only one I found that they say will work. I am going to try the next size up and see what happens.

      Hey,

No, not really, I wasn't planning on changing from injection to carb. Why do you say this ? Seriously, i'm a bit of a profane when it comes to cars, just enthusiastic about restoring and upgrading, but I really know almost nothing.

I looked at the 2030 too, but it seems "shy" compared to the one above.

What are the expected power gains from the 2030 ?

ok I don't think that will be a good cam at all. the power range is from 4400 to 7800. I can only think of one car on this board that would not grenade if they hit 7800 rpm. the peek HP on the stock cam is at 4600 rpm. even after an almnium head swap, cam swap, and a full exhaust the peak RPM won't be much above 5000 if at all. I would look for something in the 2000 - 6000 range.

Thanks man, that's some good read ! He doesn't mention what cam he used for the 216hp vs 160hp though.

For the first link and the analysis of the 3.4L engine by black34v6 - that was really nice to read. Kudos to him, great research.

I'm quite keen on modding my car, and I can shell-out some bucks when I have to, let's say average amounts. I'm not looking forward to making a monster nor spending 10k, but I can afford 300$ for a cam kit for example.

I will also order pacesetter headers as i'm with stock headers and as I suspected (and the analysis of black confirms) - they suck badly. So basically I would endup with K&N intake, custom camshaft, pacesetter headers, no cat and pacesetter catback exhaust. This sounds as a reasonable start, i've been discouraged to change heads as those i was told could cost up to 1k a piece..

              Re: 3.4L 94' Fbird Camshaft

I got a complete 3400 head, intake manifold, and TB set off ebay for $325. throw in another $600 for new 3400 compression pistons and you got all the parts you need.

also, as an ower of pacesetter headers I will tell you flat out to stay away from them. you will never get them to fit right. the primaries are bent so close to the flange that you cannot get the bolts in the bottom of the flange. I ended up having to modify( smash the **** out of the primaries with a big wrench and hmmer) the primaries and still had to use studs and nuts to put it on. you would be better off with RK sport headers.

                yah that cam, would suck

imagine not making any power until the point where your car shifts now, even if the car was setup for it, it would suck to drive

                  Re: 3.4L 94' Fbird Camshaft

Thanks for all the advice !

Based on what I read here and your suggestions, I contacted the guy at FTPP and asked him to make me a bundle of things that I would need to complete the job properly from the first time. Basically I want to leave the car with the mechanic for a week and have it driveable after that and not realize I'm missing parts or things and I need to wait another month to get them shipped to me (I'm in Europe so it always takes ages)..

                  That's what I was proposed :

                  ---------------------------------
                  Bundle includes:
                  Black Steel Header - 3.4L
                  Stage 8 Locking Header Bolts - 3.4L V6
CompCams Rocker Arm Kits--1.6 Magnum Roller Tip rockers & High Energy pushrods
                  Comp Cams K-Kit (Complete Kit) - 3.4L V6 - Camshaft Number:: COMP-16.233.4
                  Intake Manifold Gasket Set
                  Timing Cover Gasket Set

                  Includes:
                  Black Steel Header - 3.4L
                  Stage 8 Locking Header Bolts - 3.4L V6
CompCams Rocker Arm Kits--1.6 Magnum Roller Tip rockers
                  CompCams High Energy pushrods
                  Lifters
                  Matched Valve Springs
                  Valve Spring Retainers
                  Valve Locks
                  Valve Stem Seals
                  Timing Chain set
Upper and Lower Intake Manifold Gasket Sets
                  Timing Cover Gasket Set
                  -----------------------------

What do you guys think ? I'm also going to send this to my mechanic, but he doesn't really have the experience of tuning a firebird so his oppinion will likely be less usefull than yours. Am I missing something ? Please add items you think I should take or that I miss in the list above. I really want to do this right the first time.

Oh by the way, the whole bundle above will cost me a little under $800.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts !
