OK if I have "Radius Ride" then that means that the crank bare metal where it connects to the connecting rod bearing might be tapered. What else could it mean? desbris contamination?
If I have "Overlay wiped out" what would that mean? desbris contamination? maybe lack of oil?

Are the bearings supposed to seal somehow? Is that why you are not supposed to scratch them so they will seal and keep oil inside?

I need as much 411 as I can get!
    thanks

edited for clarity, I'm not sure I know what "journal" means...

journal bearing really don't seal, their function is to keep a thin layer of oil between it and the journal. having scratches probably allows oil to channel away causing surface contact, more scratches, heat, failure.

I shouldnt have to use plastigage to determine bearing oil clearance if I'm going to reuse my old bearings right?

They will be worn, wether they are bad or not.
They are fairly inexpensive, and easy to replace.
They are also likely to fail after being removed and put back, due to new break in, debris, improper re-installation, etc.

Thats not enough reason for me. I would love to use new clevite 77 bearings or federal mogul, I'm just on a time limit.

do you put lithium grease on both sides of the bearing or just one side? my book doesnt say

                    Re: bearing damage ?s

                    Alright, suit yourself.
For a few bucks, you could get new ones, and not risk damaging your cranksahft, block, rods, cam, pistons, etc.

                    But, its up to you.
You put grease on both halves of the bearing, on the crank side, not on the side that touches the block.

If the bearings are scratched or showing any copper coloring on the crank side, they are failing or already failed.

                      .
and not on the side where the bearing touches the connecting rod right?

I think copper coloring is brownish-orange. Seeing how a penny is copper.
I dont see any copper coloring anywhere on any bearing, not even on the side (as if it were a layer in the bearing).
I have "overlay wiped out" in some places, which is blueish-silver.
The bearing color itself is dark gray.

I dont know, I could always file down a bearing to see if there is any copper coloring in them?

                          Re: bearing damage ?s

the bearings may look like there are little tiny scratches(not deep) but when I run my fingernail over those scratches, I cant feel any scratch. But my nail itself makes little scratches. So the bearing is very easy to scratch.

What does "overlay wiped out" mean? Does that mean the soft surface of the bearing is damaged? I have never heard that used before.
Be careful scratching the bearings, as I won't even touch them with bare hands when I build a motor. Fingerprints are known to stay on a bearing for 100s of thousands of miles, let alone scratches.

I would try to find a new set of bearings locally if possible.
Can you take pictures of them? how does the oil hole look?

oil hole looks fine.. like a hole...
if you touch a bearing the acids left from your fingers can etch a bearing up
