    Re: blew it up

What kind of oil do you normally run?

I have a theory: I recently spun two rod bearings (happened after my cam install.) I've been told this could not be related to the cam install.

When they tore it apart, they found a significant amount of sludge built up.

The motor had 67k on it. They couldn't tell me for a fact what caused the rod bearing(s) to spin, it really is impossible to know for sure.

I had some significant lifter tick before this all happened, but no knock.

I 've been running fully synthetic oil not going too far over change intervals (5-6K) Since 25k or so.

I've also heard that too much heat, or too much mileage can break down synthetic oil. I don't run the engine into the ground by any means, although I do occasionally run it up hard. My question is: does synthetic oil break down too easily, possibly causing mechanical failure? Someone who babies the car EVERY mile and gets the oil changed RIGHT on time, EVERY time might not have any problems, but I had significant buildup not going too far over change intervals and pushing the car occasionally, not babying it every mile. I also had a badly ticking lifter, most likely a symptom of the overall problem.

Even if you don't run synthetic oil, you might want to consider this. There's nothing proven better than regular old motor oil. I had the EXACT same thing happen to my engine: knocking, engine failed, spun rod bearings. It needed new bearings, a new crank, 2 or 3 new rods, and thankfully nothing else.

      Re: blew it up

i dont believe that running fully synthetic 5-6k could really do any damage.
Although you should change more often (like 3k)
Synthetic should last longer than dino oil.
I wouldnt say dino is better than synth, or synth is better than dino.
dino is good for engine break-ins and better on the engine.
however synth is better for gas milage, and power, as well as other things

        Re: blew it up

i was looking at my new engine today and realized that it has a flex-plate instead of a flywheel meaning it came from an automatic. mine is a 5-spd and it has a new flywheel on it from when i did my clutch so im just gonna swap it over. what i was wondering was if they are the same weight? i dont want to put the flywheel on there and have it be a different weight and throw off the balance of the motor. do i have to switch over the balancer on the front from my engine now or will it be fine to keep the one from the automatic on ther? thanks a lot

look up the part number for both auto and stick cars. i believe you should be able to put the pilot bushing in, bolt up the flywheel and call it a day
