  • Should I get a double roller?

I'm putting in a vs cam, new rockers, pushrods, lifters... I figure with 140k I should replace the timing set, but should I go with the single, or double? and should I get the JP, or the rollmaster from zzperformance??? the rollmaster double is more expensive than the JP... is the only diff the price???

also... I got this VS cam cheap from a friend, and was wondering, I know this is a fairly mild cam, will I notice much difference, or should I sell it and go for the gt2.

I also got 1.9 rockers from the same friend. Would I be better off not swapping the cam (to the VS) and going with the 1.9's, or do you think it's worth it??? suggestions...

its too bad those rockers are probably too big a ratio for that cam :(
I read in my service manual that if the chain has more than an inch slack then it definately needs to be replaced!

Don't run those rockers with the cam, use one or the other.
That cam is not really THAT mild, but it is more of a blower/nitrous cam rather than NA, whereas the GT cams are NA cams.
The 1.9 rockers won't do that much for you either. Its your call. The cam will do more for you, but another cam would be a better choice IMO. The gt or gt2 grinds would work.

I would definately replace the timing set, but as to which type I would base that decision on which valve springs you want to use, and how much lift you are going to run. I would need to know which springs before I made that call.

cam, cam, cam...let me tell you they are a lot of fun, GREAT upper RPM pull. But you also need to decide if you are going to install it or not, if not plan on like $700+ for the install. If you are not doing it yoourself that may be a little steep, then rockers may come in as a good alternative. Very easy to do.

Just like an intake gives you 15.
If a cam gives you 20-40 rockers will give you 5-10 realistically, if that.
I would say you should always half advertised numbers like that.

Re: Should I get a double roller?

I'm not gonna install the 1.9's and the cam... it was an either or type of deal. I have 1.6er's to install with the cam, which I think is what I'm gonna do.

As for springs- I've got the 105# comp springs.

And I'm doing the install myself... I wish my friend would have ordered the GT2 cam instead of the VS!!!! Oh yea, and the reason he's giving me all of his stuff, was b/c he totalled his GP, the day his stuff came in for it... ouch!!

                Stock replacement should be fine.
Read the heads and cam sticky for some good info.
                Read this for sure.

Re: Should I get a double roller?

So basically I think I'm going to go with the double roller... this way I won't have to worry about the dampener, I'll probably be removing the balance shaft as well... slow6, did you do this on yours? how did it work out, and how hard was it to do?

Re: Should I get a double roller?

You will probably be ok with stock on comp 105's. If you want to bite the bullet thats fine.
I am a minimalist when it comes to modifying parts of our motors that don't need to be, so I am not a fan of removing the balance shaft if you don't need to. I have heard its not that bad of a shake in the car, but if it wasn't that bad, GM would not have spent god only knows how much to put that shaft in EVERY 3800S2.

Re: Should I get a double roller?

I dont' think it was a matter of necessity when GM put them in. It was in response to customer complaints of the engine shaking more than others. I wouldn't take the engine apart just to do that by itself, but since I'll have access to it while doing other things, I might as well. It's one of those things that's for comfort, not performance... like A/C.

Re: Should I get a double roller?

Yep. I wont strip things like that off of a car.
In order to impress me at all, a street car must have A/C and be decent on the street. If its a racecar only, by all means remove it. If it sees any street action, especially daily, then leave it as stock as possible.

Thats the same story I have heard T-Mill. Exactly
I have heard from people like Lance @ Abbott racing and
Viper and others that they cant tell a difference in vibrations with it out.

I'm putting my engine back together right now, so let me know if you want pics

Yes pics would be great. I should start reassembly within the next week or so. (if everything goes smoothly...)

Also, I have headers, will the engine fit back in w/ headers on? or should I wait and install them after the engine's back in? It'd be much easier to install them before, but I've heard that you should take them off if you're removing the engine, so I imagine it's the same for putting it back in...?
