okay so in passing i started putting together some plans on how to put a carb motor in a 4th gen F body. if i am correct in my theroy the LT1 is an updated small block that shares its block dimensions with an older small block. in theory a sbc should fit into an LT1 era car. so i started doing some thinking and heres what i think youd need (tenetively):

    -350
    -T56 tranny
-do away with car's PCM and use autometer gauges in custom dash plate
-unhook ABS but power brakes will still work by hookin up vac line on new motor that went to power brakes on the old car
-Hook up PCV and EGR on new motor to pass inspection (already on a motor we took out of my dads 78 camaro, and my state doesn't have emissions, just that you have the equipment)
    -current driveshaft should fit (aluminum)
    -new console
    -clutch/pedal assembly from a LT1 car
    -clutch
-LT1 bellhousing or possible to use SB bellhousing

thats all i can think of for right now... shoot me some ideas on what you think about this. it could be a totally screwed up idea with no hope of ever seeing the light of day. but i know i have seen pictures of a carbed 4th gen before.

and i realize it wouldnt be the best choice for a motor, but itd be unique and still a V8, just build the motor a little before i put it in

you better check with your DMV, I know in some states it is illegal do swap a motor that is older than the car itself, i.e. if you had a 2000 camaro, you couldnt swap LT1 from say a 95.

THere not toing to like seeing a carbed engine under your hood, if you acutlly have to pass a visual then Id say thats a no go.

For power purposes, if you really set on a carb set up. Convert the LT1. Alot of guys do that. You can still make 500 hp N/A.

I've been throwing around the same ideas ... going old school carb in a fourth gen is possible, and has been done. I personally like it, but pretty much the motor and tranny will have to be replaced ... driveshaft probably won't fit, and the whole 'legal' issue I've been curious about. I found everything online to convert it, but the $$$$ is the big part. Either way, it would still be cheaper than going with a LT or LS and the buildup possibilities are endless for a SBC or BBC. Good luck and keep us (me) posted if you decide to do it.

You'd practically have to pull the motor out to get to the distributor cap! ;)

I think someone on this board has done this before. It was a while ago though. They have a carb kit the the LS motors. That's the way I would go if I wanted the old school new school thing.

just curious..why would u wanna do that? i heard that fuel injection engines are more effecient and out perform carbuerators in every way so i read in another thread on this site...

                          you are right
except for the "in every way" part
the only thing that carbs are better at is upper rpms which the LS1 already has alot of power at. But thats why you just get an LS6 intake (unless your LS1 already came with one which some did).
SFI is better for low rpm torque than carbs, better response, better gas mileage. I am not a fan of carbs at all.. they are kinda hard to tune (which is manually instead of electronically).
