main bearing cap torqueing

  • main bearing cap torqueing

    This is what my Haynes says which trips me out cause I dont think Haynes is always right:

    1) Tighten all caps to 52ft/lbs to seat the caps
    2) Loosen all caps one full turn
    (which would make it COMPLETELY Loose) Does it mean 360* or 180*?????
    3) Tighten all to 177 in/lbs
    4) Tighten all to 29.5 ft/lbs
    5) Tighten all an additional 35*
    6) Tighten all an additional 35*
    7) Tighten all an additional 40*
    8) Insert and tighten the side bolts to 132 in/lbs
    9) Tighten the side bolts an additional 45*

    also when I torqued my rod caps its:
    20ft/lbs
    then 50*

    after the 20ft/lbs I can already tell its very hard to turn.
    once i go the extra 50* its impossible to turn

      Also, I guess that on the rear main seal gasket the rubber part sticks outward instead of inwards towards the engine? Seems like it could go either way and MIGHT not matter?

        I've got 2 different kind of torque wrenches, I think they both suck.. I'm gonna go buy some new ones. Hopefully a torque angle gauge too, that would REALLY help!

          After your torque them to spec, and then you go to turn them the additional so many degrees, they do get very tight. That is the idea of torque to yield.
          You will usually need a breaker bar to do it.

            uhhh, I was talking about Rod Cap Bolts and Main Cap Bolts, neither of which are T 2 Y.

              I guess it doesnt really matter

                It doesn't really matter because the next step is a torque not a degree spec.
                Make sure it is looser than 177 in-lbs though. I think you will be alright.

                  I was taught back in elementary that one full turn is 360*

                    me too but that will make it completely loose
