  • expert opinions needed for a possible stroker motor

Ok, Ive been throwing calculations aorund a bit and thinking about ways to increase my 3.8L N/A power.

My thoughts are a possible custom 4.41L stroker. Im NOT talking about buying a kit from anyone but having my crank custom grinded to the spec i need and match the pistons and rods to spec. The bore and stroke i would make is a 69mm x 72mm.....that will make a 4.41L motor. Is this even possible due to connecting rod length? I understand I would need a bigger cam than my GT2 cam right now. My fuel would have to increase and I think my head design is adequate, my heads flow 2% better than supersix heads.

What would be the max displacement you can stroke our 3.8 motor to? All opinions are welcome.

You are limited on bore by cooling water jackets inside the block.
You are limited on stroke by the length of the cylinder, clearance of the crank and rods, and by the crank itself.
It has been tossed around the the bore shouldn't go much more than .020" over. This limits your bore to whatever that comes out to in mm. I don't feel like doing the work.
The stock bore and stroke are 96mm and 86mm according to the tech database, so I am not sure what up with your numbers. The crank would have to be ground down a lot to move the displacement up that much, and that would make it very weak. Unless you have a new crank forged for you, but by then you have spent more money than the entire car is worth.
I guess my question is..... why?

To answer ur question: I want to make the most power possible N/A. I spent a ton of hours researching heads and cams and valvetrains when i did the sticky for head research. I was able to net close to 300hp with my head/cam setup.

So that is why I am thinking of this. Question: What exactly is a forged crank compared to a custom grinded crank?

I think i messed up with my calcs, Ill come post back with the best bore/stroke combo i can come up with

        Just for the record:

Intense-Racing is and has been working on a forged crank and ZZperformance is on par to release a forged 4.1L stroker setup.

Yea ive seen the stroker that zzp has out and intense in coming out with but i feel that if i can have my crank custom grinded to spec that will cost me about 1/10th the price. I guess it goes back to my question of what is the difference between a forged crank and a custom grinded crank.

AZ3.8 - I reworked my number and found that if i do a .020" over on the bore it will increase the size from 96.52mm to 97.028mm and to bore it .030" over it will bring the size from 86.36mm to 96.36. Those number will yield a 4.31L motor. I guess the weak point is the stroke, which I am unsure of in regards to how far you can increase the stroke and compression.

A reground crank is where material is actually removed from the crankshaft to allow a longer throw. This weekens the crank considerably. ZZP's stroker is more fragile than a stock crank.
A forged crank is a new crank that is forged instead of cast (stronger than stock) that is designed to have a longer stroke. It is not cheap, as you would be getting a custom, 1 off part made for yourself.

You are limited on compression by the type of fuel you use. At a point, clearance between the valves and the piston will be an issue.
