I have my engine out of my car, and it went pretty smooth, took a little effort but came out fairly easily...

Now... a guy I used to work with got broadsided in his car, the only damage done was to the door and the door sill, but was enough to total the car $3700 damage, and the car's only valued at $3100. So he's just going to buy it back from the insurance company, and he's selling me his motor for $150 55k miles compared to my 140k but the problem is, we were trying to pull the motor today and it doesn't seem to want to part from the tranny. I just did this on my 96, and I had to tug a little to get it apart, but this one doesn't want to budge... Is there a technique anyone knows of that would get this apart, or should it definitely not be this hard. I'm 99.999% sure I've taken everything off. I mean everything was pretty fresh in my mind since I just did this a couple weeks ago.

    help!!!!!

can you pull the motor/trans togethor out the top b/c I think he's selling that too... I'll ask him when I see him tomorrow evening...

yes, you can pull both motor and tranny out the top
    you must've missed some bolts
My tranny practically seperated all by itself from the motor

Seriously, you must have either missed some bolts or you just aren't pulling the motor off the tranny straight. Sometimes it takes a little wiggle to get the tranny off.

Yea, when I pulled mine, I just gave it a good firm tug, and it came off relatively easy. I'll be working on it more today.

How did you do that. I cant get any progress with me engine. Do I need to start from under the car and then take it off the jack and take the engine out the top or do I have to strip everything off the block and then take it out. It's pouring in right now and I can see my Haynes manual sitting on the back of the car so I dont think its going to help me anymore.

you have to remove everything from underneath the car, and then, yes let the car down, Place a jack under the tranny (use a block of wood if it's an A4), get the bellhousing to engine bolts from up top, lift the engine off the mounts with a hoist, remove the engine mount through bolts. and the engine should come forward fairly easily. Mine took a little tugging forward, but it was a pretty rare case, as I've never had it happen before this last one. For most people it comes right out.

              What you must remove:
              exhaust
intake plenum (and everything necessary to get to the plenum)
              all electrical connections
              starter
              a/c compressor
              radiator and ac condensor

there's probably more... but I can't remember off the top of my head... mine was a stick, but I think on an automatic, you have to remove the plate off the front of the tranny and remove the bolts on the flywheel while someone else rotates the crank so that you can reach them all.

My honest advice.... If you Haynes is in fact ruined, go buy a new one. The first time I removed an engine, I used a Haynes, and it was very straight forward. Follow every step to a T, and it shouldn't be too hard.

note: pulling the engine takes less skill and patience than building one...
