what all has to be installed on a cylinder to get a compression reading?
I dont have intakes on, but that shouldnt matter, cause youre supposed to have the throttle wide open.
I dont have the headers on, but that doesnt matter
I just got this engine assembled, it hasnt even started yet.
edit: i lied, the pushrods, lifters, and rockers move

And it won't start if nothing is moving ... did you put the timing chain on ?? I'm assuming the cam is in there since you have the pushrods / lifters installed.
Also, you don't need intakes / headers on for a compression test ... just block and heads, all assembled of course.
yes all that is good.
without the cam, the lifters would just fall through the engine
do I have to wait for the rings to "seat"
or am I overlooking something?
do all the rockers have to be installed? i would think not
i would think only the rockers for that cylinder need to be on

If your timing chain is on ... the cam is in ... then when you move the crank, everything else will move too. If it's not, you have a huge issue somewhere else.
Well, the only thing I can think of left is, are the lifters actually riding on the cam? I know with mine there was 'holders' that keep the lifters from turning. Maybe you didn't get them all the way seated into the lifter bores and they aren't actually touching the cam. As far as rotation, the engine runs clockwise, but it wouldn't matter if you turned it either way.

sorry, i have to call you on that. According to my haynes, you shouldnt rotate the crank counter clock-wise, but I think it only means when its connected to the tranny. Its probably bad for the tranny

I assume I'm not gonna get a compression reading until I have broken in the rings? That doesnt make sense to me. My ring side clearance was perfect. The rings were pushing out against the cylinder wall too.
Maybe I should try a wet compression test...
Shouldnt I be lubricating the cylinder walls anyways?
