  • To rebuild or not to rebuild??

I have a 95 camaro v6 3.4. It has 150000 miles on it and right now it runs pretty good. I just bought a 3400 top end and am wondering what to do next. Should I rebuild the motor from top to bottom or should I just buy some 3400 pistons put them on the existing connecting rods and assemble my engine?? What do you guys think?? Oh if it makes a difference the car has overheated before it developed a head gasket leak and ran low on coolant, but that was fixed and the motor runs alright. Also the guy that had it before me didnt change the oil on time every time but the motor runs fine and doesnt really use any oil. what should I do?? Thanks!!

I have a 96 3.8 and I developed a leak in uppermanifold gasket and I sealed it with some stop leak, I know bad but you do stupid things when your 19. It was fine for 30k miles or so but then the gasket went and that was all she wrote. I rebuilt the top end of the motor against the advice of my dad, to do top and bottom, and about 2 months later the bottom end went. Needless to say I took my car to a motor shop and had them put in a remanufactured motor and I went to Vegas for 3 weeks. I would suggest doing the whole thing but thats just off my experience. Best of luck

Depends on what you want to do with the car.

If your going to add performance mods for more horse power, then a rebuild would be the way to go.

But if your going to keep the car stock (no mods) then it would be cheaper for you to get a low mileage engine from a wrecker.

you are asking to re-use the connecting rods? and get new pistons??

If I was you I wouldnt re-use the rod that the head gasket blew on.
I blew my head gasket on cylinder #1 and bent the rod. Probably ran with it bent even.

yea, sorry, I thought you had a 3.8
The guy I got my rod from has more for cheap, in good condition, with rings.
Just ask around alot. I'm sure you can find a good rod for cheap.
