I know this is kind of a stupid question but I was wondering on port/polishing heads what do they do, and do you need to replace any parts after they do that…
And another thing do they sell any aluminum heads for a 3.4 and if so do you know the web site… how much on ave does a p/p job cost. Thanks joe
They basically open up the intake runners (or passage way) in the head using a grinder. They make the runners as big as possible and shape them in such a way as to promote the smoothest, quickest and largest volume of airflow through the intake passage without compromising the structural integrity of the head or the valve components. Then using polishing attachments they refinish the passage way surface to be as smooth as possible. Again this helps airflow.
Each intake runner (or passage way) is checked on a flow bench (a piece of equipment that measures airflow) and adjusted (by more grinding) to make sure that it flows exactly the same as all the other runners.
This is a very specialized and caluculating procedure that should not be attempted by someone who is inexperienced.
Specialized valve train components are not required, stock valves, springs, etc. can be used. But the whole idea is to increase the ability of the engine to breath and usually Porting and Polishing is done in conjunction with the installation of high performance valve train components.

AL heads on a 3.4 exist... you just have to use the heads of the front wheel drive 3400's.... all of this is explained in great detail in the 3.4L stickie at the top of the advanced tech page... read that and go from there...
also, porting and polishing a set of heads is meant to make the heads flow as much air into the cylinders as possible. Now, in some cased, that requires making the ports as large as possible... But in most cases, it means slightly increasing the port dims and contouring the sides to help force air around the short radius on the floor of the port wehre it turns down towards the valve. To create the best flow from your heads, you need to pay the utmost attention to this area, as well as the area directly at the valves. Most of your gains will be achieved by perfecting those two areas....
with that said, i would recommend a shop do your heads for you. Abbott does a lot of peoples stuff... and maybe a local engine shop will do them too.
IF you are gonna do the P&P, the AL heads previously mentioned have a lot more potential. Stock AL heads have been shown to flow better than fully ported Iron heads (stock heads). so its all up to you... if you wanna go thru the process of switching heads, then the gains are worth it. If not, then port the iron ones and realize they are a not ideal... its all up to you and what yuo want to go thru for your car...
Good luck
