      Re: port and polish job

Porting/Polishing cylinder heads can make a very noticeable increase in horsepower, but only if it is done right. I seen alot of companys that sell porting accessory kits for customers to use with their angle grinders. Most of the time you can get a little bit of an increase in power by doing it that way if the port tunnels are modified correctly. However, the most performance out of a port/polish job will be achieved by the use of a flowbench. This is the only way to figure out the maximum flow of the ports. Just because a port is enlarged and smoothed out doesn't mean it's gonna flow the most through it.

the 3800 makes 200 hp with 177.5 cfm @ 0.400" (max lift) = 1.13 bhp/cfm. using abbott's s3 heads, which flow ~213 cfm @ 0.400", you should have ~240 bhp with the stock cam. however, a typical bowl port and polish (the best bang for the buck) should give you ~10% more flow ~220 bhp.

that's not bad for the price of a few carbides and a few hours of your time! of course, if you want the extra 20 hp, that's where skill or paying someone else money comes in.

there are plenty of references for porting. i have john lingenfelter's book, smokey yunick's, any number of car crafts, internet, etc.

there is no definite answer on that as each place ports them differently and to different extents...

I will say it is worth it though.

-10....if the p&p is done wrong you can mess up your gains. Like if a rookie did it and didn't know what he was doing. It takes a lot of knowledge and skill to do a good p&p job

never trust a mechanic who has no experience with out head design to port them out. ZZP, Intense, Abbott.....those are companies you can trust.
