I just rebuilt my engine as we all know.
I'm cranking it over (yes with the starter)
and its not building ANY oil pressure!
The dash gauge reads close to zero!
I kinda smashed up the filter when I installed the engine.
Maybe I should try a new filter.

yes you should. I do believe we recommended you do so and i thought you said you would. There should be a bypass valve i believe and I'm not really sure you are going to get pressure readings when cranking.
then the oil psi dived back down to 1 or 2 psi BEFORE I changed the filter
I've got a new filter on it and its still at 2psi
Maybe it caught a glimpse of some petroleum jelly or assembly lube heh ;)

oil pressure switch? lol
its the stock oil pressure sender/pump
the one that is built into the timing cover
that manually pumps oil when the crank is going.
I dont think I'm gonna really get much pressure just cranking

the reason I hadnt switched out the smash filter before is some people said I could try and use the smashed one to prime the pump (since it had oil, pre-assembly lube and petroleum jelly in it)
