Can the rear-main seal be replaced with the engine in the vehicle? The haynes doesnt say. I'm sure it can! easily! well, except for the disconnecting the tranny part...UGHH!!!

I've only driven my car about a mile since the rebuild. I over-tightened the rear-main seal bolts cause it was the only thing I didnt use a torque wrench on. Think I should get a new gasket or wipe the old one off with Acetone? and the block surface? What if the gasket is completely intact and hasnt heated and rubbed off onto the block? I'm sure you're gonna say get a new one, so I will
      thanks

        wow dude...
        umm...
you say the bleeder valve keeps bleeding? if you mean the coolant bleeder valve then make sure it is tight after you top off the coolant.

it sounds like you tested the thermo by boiling it....?

make sure you have enough tranny fluid...or not too much either.

the thermo isn't in backwards, is it? spring needs to face into the block.

i have not changed heads on an L36 but can the head gaskets be on backwards? covering up coolant passages?

good luck, sounds like you have your hands (and wrenches) full.

Nope. Unless he's got a different set of head gaskets than me or he didn't look at them whatsoever, it says on each one which side of the gasket is the front and which side goes up.

we already talked about how the gasket goes on and the fact that it works.
            someone missed some reading

A missing O-ring in the intake manifold would cause you to burn some water.
Are you losing coolant or just overheating?
I would try the tool you can rent where you put this fluid in a bulb, and put it on the radiator, it turns a certain color if there are combustion gases in the coolant, it confirms or denies a head gasket failure for sure.

                  yes, or the tail pipe

I'm just worried about my low oil psi right now.
when I first started it for the first time oil psi was 55. Now its 30.
I got stock replacement clevite 77 bearings and had the crank checked.
I have a rear main leak, but that wouldnt show low oil psi

                    Re: busted Head Gasket AGAIN

I logged my oil psi and HPT says its -15.5 usually.
My dash gage says its at about 35psi
Could my sensor be bad or something?

I manually got under the car and switched the gear select lever on the tranny! From drive to reverse, I could feel it switch to reverse, but HPT has been saying I'm in 1st the whole time!

My rear-main leak isnt just a drip-drip-drip, its more of a small pour. I dont know how to explain it, maybe like 2 cups a minute!

replace your rear main before you worry about oil pressure.

i want to, just HATE those top 2 tranny bolts!

someone told me that the rear main leak wouldnt affect my oil PSI but I dont believe him. I have a gusher on my hands ;)

                          Re: busted Head Gasket AGAIN

After all that you've been through, now to have to deal with this! How disappointing for you. I even feel bad for you. Wish I had some quick and easy answers for you, but I don't. As usual it's one of those "you gotta get in there and find the problems" deals, which sucks after putting in as much effort as you have.

In regards to the oil pressure, tell us exactly how you blocked off the oil supply hole for the balence shaft that you removed. I read the post about your balence shaft removal, but it was not clear how you did that. I'm thinking that if what you did came undone, then the oil being bypassed there could be contributing factor or maybe the fault.

                            Re: busted Head Gasket AGAIN

i dont feel bad for myself, so you shouldnt. It was directly my fault for not torqueing the rear main down. Doing it by feel, I knew I was overtorqueing.
I just wish my tranny was working. Even when I manually get underneath and put the gear selector in OD its still in 1st.

I could've sworn I did the balance shaft right. I blocked off both sides of course. Then plugged up the 2 oil holes in the back with JB Weld (1 oil hole for lubricating the bearing and 1 thats on the rear of the block).
It would make sense though, my oil pressure WAS at 55 now its 30.
I wish engines had more system monitoring technology. Thanks alot for feeling bad for me though! ;)

You couldn't have tightened the rear cover tight enough to make it run out like it is. The seal is probably in the cover wrong. Also, the leaking rear main seal will not affect oil pressure.

                                Yup I agree with WickEDSix.

I bet the JB weld didn't hold.
