  • 3.4L v6 vacuum line question

Hi, quick question, I recently rebuilt the top end of my 93 3.4l v6 and I need some clarification on the vacuum line on the top of the motor at the back of the engine on top. It is a T with two different sizes, one goes to the brake booster which I know and the other end of the T is aimed at the front of the motor. Where does it go?

    Thank!

it had the dreaded coolant leaking problem i just did the intake gaskets but i think i need to do the head gaskets too. i was trying to avoid breaking loose the exhaust if i didn't have too. the fresh oil has a different feel after a while, it is losing a little water too still, and it steams a little too much out of the dipstick. i'm going to run it a little and then drain all the oil and let it separate to see if i have any water in there. it doesn't overheat so i haven't decided yet. i bought the car to repair and need to register it and drive it a little before i decide.

if you could tell me where that vacuum line leads to that would be great.

Ok, on that big 'T' on the rear, like you said, the big side goes to the brake boster. The smaller side goes to a plastic vacumm line that is in one of the wiring harnesses. It has a rubber push-on connecting on this plastic line that pushes on to the 'T'. That harness may have fallen back a little when you took the intake off. It comes out of one of the corrigated wiring covers.

This line runs into the passenger compartment and supplies the vacumm requiered to operate all the A/C doors and stuff.

And incase you were wondering, that other fitting on the top of the intake plenum that sticks stright up on the passenger side goes to the vacumm line for the fuel pressure regulator.

Wayne is correct. I just did a top end rebuild too so I remember those vacuum connections all too well. It is such a PITA working under that cowl.

did you pull the heads off too? how much of a pain in the butt is it. any tips? it looks like a bear getting to the exhaust manifold bolts on both sides, that is for sure.

Re: 3.4L v6 vacuum line question

Yes I did. For the manifold bolts the driver's side is actually quite easy. The passenger side is not bad getting to the top ones once the alternator and EGR are out of the way (and associated bracketry) but the bottom front bolt can not be accessed without moving the A/C compressor and there are like 5 or 6 bolts that hold that to the bracket. We actually pulled the passenger head with the manifold still attached. To get the drivers head off you have to pull the power steering pump/bracket.

Check out my website at www.funkz.net/firebird as I did a writeup of the job.
