There's a few problems with the gxp:
1.) It's designed for fwd. The engine and tranny are designed for fwd cars. The only tranny mounted to date is the old 5 spd. getrag tranny that came from older gm v6s and the very rare 86-88 fieros. Smaller displacement=lower torque. Our engines are virtually indestructable. Your best bet is to just upgrade your current engine. If you dont wanna spend the cash to go more displacement, then why swap? You can get more hp and tq with a cam, exhaust, maybe some FI for the price a swap would cost.Car expresses who you are. Re: v6 upgrade?
It is upsetting, but it would look pretty bad if, in 1997, the fastest V6 Camaro, a Y87 v6 5speed hard top, outran their slowest V8, their convertible LT1 automatic with the tallll gears. 220HP v6 y87 5speed hard top could probably eat an LT1 auto convert on the 1/4 mile\'97 Camaro M5 Y87 3.23 LSD, homebrew CAI, highfloCat, Flowmaster catback, Pacesetter headers, specstage3 clutch and aluminum flywheel, !egr, 2kW system.

Possible L67 bottom end w/ abbott heads and a turbo in the works... gotta do more homework

Re: v6 upgrade?
if they made the engine power of the v6 and v8 too close together, there wouldnt be enough justification in buying the v8? It's also about being able to use that engine platform in other gm vehicles to cut cost. You would be crazy to go with a v8 if it only had 40-50 more hp than the v6? The lower Insurance and better gas mpg would outweigh the extra hp. stock for stock i dont think the best v6 y87 could "eat" the slowest stock lt1 auto/convert.Black 1996 3.8 Firebird T5, SLP CAI, Pacesetter Ceramic Headers,160* t-stat, PCMforLess Tune, Flowmaster American Thunder catback, Car Sounds Cat, custom s-pipe, MSD coils and wires, NGK plugs, 3.42 posi rear, B&M Ripper, 245/50 BFG-G-force's
