  • Balance Shaft and Double Timing Chain

Where can I find the double timing chain for my 96 3.8? Also I beleive I have read somewhere that the ???balace shaft??? has to be removed to go with a double chain set up...What is involved with removing this and quite honestly what in the hell is a balance shaft?

    Thanks

Check out the vendors listed in the stickies for the double timing chain. You don't need to remove the balance shaft just disengage it by removing the gear. I think it is mandatory if your going with the double roller. I believe and don't quote me on this, it was installed by gm to assist in subduing some of the vibration in the engine. Some have said it's not neccesary and others have. Personally when I can dig into my engine that far it will be disengaged. It's about 10-15 of weight so it's a little bit of a drag on the engine.
Let's flip a coin. Heads I get tail, Tails I get head.

Thanks for your help...I have gone through the stickies and all I have found is this http://www.3800performance.com/Merch...roduct_Count=2
It says it is for the 98 and up...does anyone make one that works with my 96?

      Thanks again

zzp also sells a double roller. Also yea taking the gear off will work fine for the balance shaft issue.

What mods do you have that you require a double roller though? You have valvetrain upgrades?

I am in the process of rebuilding my heads with 105# springs and going with a GT2 cam. I am sure I could get away with a OEM timing set, I was just considering going for the over built bullet proof kinda thing...I just checked zzp and their timing set is 139.00, much easier on the pocket book than the 300.00 the other site wanted.

do you have a stock engine?

if you do, a double roller is just a total waste of $$

It is a stock lower end. I am going with a higher lift cam as well as stiffer springs.
