yes this is a stupid newbie question, friend winston argues that SOHC means you have 1 cam over each head, I know hes wrong, but hes persistant and says show me proof.
please somebody verify that
SINGLE OVER HEAD CAM MEANS YOU HAVE 1 CAM IN THE ENTIRE ENGINE
Sorry man. SOHC means one cam per head. DOHC means two cams per head. F-bodies only have one cam though as they are all OHV motors.

Single Overhead Cam means one cam in each head, so if you are talking about a SOHC V8 engine like Ford's modular engine, it would have two cams in total, one for each head.
If you have a Honda with a single head for it's single cylinder bank, you would have one cam.
We have one cam in our engine because we have an OHV (Overhead valve) configuration, with the cam in the engine block itself.
SOHC -> Single Overhead cam -> One cam in each head
DOHC -> Dual Overhead cam -> Two cams in each head
OHV -> Overhead Valve -> Cam inside block, valves actuated by rockers in the head by means of a pushrod link to the cam.
You're right if you're talking about an inline engine like a B16 Honda or an inline 6, but a V-configuration SOHC engine has two heads, one cam per head, thus two cams.

pretty simple. sohc is single over head cam, so ou obviously do not have a cam only on one head so you have 2 together, dohc is 2 per side. as he said above we have ohv motors, our cam is not over the cylinder heads

Yeah except the v6 part. We can launch good but don't have the power to take over the rest of the way. Torque is good for launching horsepower needs to take over around 3-4k rpm's to carry you the rest of the way. Just about any car can be good at the 1/4 mile or any form of racing as long you put the time money and research into it.
Let's flip a coin. Heads I get tail, Tails I get head.
