  • Christmas list/cam setup

alright my parents agreed to get me a cam and a few other things as far as valvetrain improvements go. This is what i got so far and i just wanted to get ur guys opinions of my setup, and if there is a different cam that i should go with then let me know. My goal is to be right around 300hp N/A and eventully a small shot of nitous(100 at the very most). Also the car is not a DD but isnt strictly a track car either so, the cam has to be somewhat streetable. Also i do have all of the basic bolt-ons: alumn. driveshaft, gears, intake, headers, exhaust, and right now im saving my money to get a set of heads done.

    Comp Cams VS cam
    Comp Cams 90# valve springs
    JP double roller timing chain
    Comp Cams reuseable rocker bolts
    ZZP cam install kit

I know im going to need some sort of rockers but i dont know what kind so if someone could give me some good suggestions it would be much appericated. Thats all i have as of now feel free to let me know what i am missing.

you should also think about Hp-tuners

the VS cam is generally a blower cam, IIRC. I was looking into getting it too, but then was told not to. I'd go with the GT2 if I were you. As for rockers, that would depend on your heads. If you get some that'll allow more valve clearance, than 1.8 roller rockers would be the way to go, IMO. If not, then you should be able to use 1.7 rollers in there with ZZP's modified retainers and valve locks. If you're not changing the ratio, then stock should be just fine. Also, when you go to install this all, gasket match your UIM and LIM. Make sure you get all the needed gaskets, and even get MLS head gaskets if you're looking to get every little bit out of the car. And like gotchocomilk said, tuning will also be necessary after all of this, along with a set of injectors.

thanks Radracer, as far as hpturners goes i dont think i will be needing that because i have a buddy the works at Anderson Ford and he said that he could get me some pretty cheap dyno time so im going to be getting it tuned that way. If i get bigger injectors, GTPs for exaple, will i have to get a bigger fuel pump? Also i already have a spare set of upper and lower intakes i gasket matched. I'm working on getting a set of heads done and they are going to have the same things done to them as abbot stage II's.

if your thinking about nitrous down the line you have to get a cam that is for nitrous. when i did my cam, i went with a gt1 cam since i had a 75 shot of nitrous at the time. now that i'm up to a 125 shot i'm really thinking about going with the xp cam. (both are comp cams)

the gt cams go up to a gt 3 cam *i think* so go with the gt or the xp

The GT2 is supposed to be very nitrous friendly. If you're looking for streetability w/good power, I'd recommend either the GT2 or Abbott's N/A cam. I'm not too sure how Abbott's cam reacts to nitrous though. You don't need a bigger pump for bigger injectors. GTP's should have 33#, which should be big enough for your set-up. But, if you find some bigger ones for cheaper that will work, then get them; you really can't go too big when it comes to injectors. I think Abbott's heads are milled down abit, so you may be pushing it with 1.8 rockers. If you have to go with rollers, change the ratio to a 1.7 so you get abit more power from the cam. If you're not going to change the ratio, you won't see much more power from them than over stock. Make sure when you tune it that you have a wideband.

you need to look into getting an abbott NA cam, it is great NA and also loves the nitrous (quite a few use it for nitrous including lance himself from abbott). You will need hptuners with the cam to get the full potential. Also 90# springs will not be enough, go 105#

                Re: Christmas list/cam setup

Heck, with P&P Heads and UIM and LIM, I'd go with 130# springs, just to be safe. That way, there's always more room for improvement too. IIRC, 105# springs require a double roller timing chain (or it's atleast recommended) as do the 130#, so be sure to include that into your budget.

Looks good to me man. I think the cam install kit will basically have everything you need to install the rockers as well, except for the bolts. So, you may be able to save a few bucks if you buy just the bolts instead of the whole kit. Doing anything to the valves? A nice 3 (or 5 if you have the cash) angle job would complement your build nicely :D
