    Ok.

    So here i am.
im looking to boost the horsepower in my engine without doing nitrous or a turbo.

i want to know a little about cams, i read the thing and i understand the concept vaguely.

    HEre

This says you need no other modification to run this safely.
If i was to buy and pay someone to install.

what do you think the price would be.
and what would hp/torq gains be?

And would i need anything else.

Im Kinda noobish when it comes to this.
    and on a limited budget

    Mods:
    Slp Dual Cold Air Intake
    Racing Stripes

    Re: Cam Questions

They will rape you on labor most likely.. but it's not really good to upgrade just the cam. Most people upgrade all of the other "supporting mods" IE rockers, pushrods, etc etc.. and some cams (most) you have to change to stronger spring/retainers.

As for the overall price.. well I would say definitely $800+ (and I think that is on the lower end of the scale) or more JUST for the install.. so my advice is just learn how to do it yourself and research. Unless you don't mind spending alot of money.

As far as HP/TQ gains.. all cams are different. Some cams can increase just a little bit, some can give you an extra 70 hp if you upgrade the heads with it.

Overall it's really expensive and I wouldn't dive into it if you don't know what you are doing.

And I see you posted a link to a turbo cam. If I remember right, turbo cams actually have less exhaust duration than N/A, so if you don't have plans to get a turbo like you said, don't get a turbo cam. lol

I'd at least change the valvespring to at least 90#s

      oh, this

...do not belong in the same sentance. Installing a cam is about 18 hours of work, from beginning to end...multiply that by a shop's typical $60-$100/hr rate, and be prepared to shell out that much

Im Kinda noobish when it comes to this.
then do alot of reading before you crack a seal on your motor. Basically, you should know enough about cams before you buy one that you could basically do the install just from the acquired knowledge

        Re: Cam Questions

If you can't install it yourself, a cam's not worth it :(. I personally would go with the GT2, but only because I've heard so many good things about it and that i have one sitting in my bedroom :D. If you're going to do it, atleast up the springs and retainers. Otherwise, you may see valve float at the higher RPMs and that'll hurt you of power. You'll then have the tear the engine apart again just to put in some springs and retainers, and that would flat out suck. Read the sticky on here. It'll get you going on the install. Search Search Search Search!! There have been many others in the same boat as you who have done their own install and are happy with their results. I'm in the same boat.

You dont need to upgrade rockers for a cam and you almost always dont need to upgrade pushrods.

A cam install will be about 400-500 bucks

Expect to pay about 1000-1200 for a cam, springs/retainers/gaskets, and install.
