update: zahn, i still need a link to a stud extractor i can buy (i'm lazy, and i dont want to get the wrong size).

Went out at 3:30 in the morning to work on the car cuz i couldn't sleep even though i had school startin the next morning....

Anyhow it was quite productive. I put in a new 02 sensor, removed the LIM gaskets and RTV in the valleys, put a new oil filter on (i took the old one off when i drained the oil) I also removed the battery and coolant reservoir (i'm gonna dump it and clean it) , I also installed the new Alternator underdrive pulley that i got (only reason i'm putting it on is cuz i did the BIG 3 wire upgrade) plus i think i got my new torque wrench figured out.

Zahn, i could use that stud extractor plus the correct size belt for my car now that it has BOTH underdrive pulleys on it. BTW, when i installed the pulley i took out the spacer that was on there and i tightened it down pretty tight with a breaker bar and socket, did i do it right?

New UIM, LIM, and pushrods should be comin this week, its exciting times!

    thanx

Don't know what to tell you on the size, is that bolt 10mm? But if it's sticking out enough to grab hold of you can't get it with channel locks? You can drill it also and retap if necessary. And yes, you take the spacer off with the stock alt pulley when you put the new one on. Stock belt on a 3.4 with A/C is 77.5" and I used a 76" with the underdrive pulley set but it's a little tight. A 76.5" or 77" ought to work well. And it's 6 rib.

            well i promised pics....

i cleaned up the new UIM, wire brushed it, then hit it with 3 coats of black and 2 coats of clear coat. I like it, its subtle but nice. I only did the parts that will be showing. As soon as it dries i'll put the fuel rail, throttlebody ect on it then maybe get another pic up.

Looks good. I didn't have time to paint any of my stuff when it was apart the first time, maybe I'll have to do that now.

yeah i used 1200 degree just cuz i had it, but 500 will work fine too, i don't think the plenum gets that hot. wire brushed it, wiped it off, then put three coats of black on and 2 clear coats. my previous plenum was painted red with white letters but idk i just felt like doin somethin a little different this time.

Ok, its friday, so if my pushrods dont come in the mail today then i'll have to wait til at least tuesday to start the install grrrr.

In the mean time i'm gonna be cleaning off the new LIM, its really dirty. I'm also gonna install my new CTS in it and my low temp thermostat.

til then i have some questions that need answering.

                    1. the gaskets on the new manifolds are really on there good, i have most of them off but at the bolt holes the gaskets are on there like a rock. Any idea how to get the rest off? maybe soak in rubbing alcohol and use a metal scraper?

                    2. The chrome edelbrock valve covers i'm gonna be getting have me a bit worried. I'm not sure if they come with an oil filler cap, and if they don't i can't seem to find a place that sells the matching cap. Also, i was looking at pics of robs (rt1) engine bay with the new valve covers in, he doesn't have a breather tube in (the tube that goes from the passanger side valve cover back to the rubber intake tube.) in his pic he has both of them blocked off. So what does that tube do and will it be ok to block it off like rob did?

                    • Re: Rocker Q's.

that big tube that goes left is for the pcv valve on the valve cover and if you dont know it removes crankcase pressure and you dont have to have it for the car to run but i definately would try to keep it . the little skinny one is for the evap purge control solenoid and i would not disconnect that one either. as far as that gasket you can but a gasket remover solvent at oreileys or autozone and it is made to soften gaskets
cant wait till my lt1 and nitrous.

i'll have to pick up some solvent, thanx

also need a quick answer! there is a set of stock 3.4 valve covers on ebay, sale ending in just hours! i emailed the seller, he said they are in good condition, no damage or bends. i could probably pick them up for 30$ shipped or around there.... so now i ask should i just go ahead and buy these valve covers? they are stock so i know the pcv and other stuff will work fine, plus i could always paint them myself to make them look nice right? let me know what u think.

                        thanx

what is wrong with the ones that came off? if they are no good i would buy the ebay ones as a safe keep . i mean if the chrome ones are the ones yhou truly want im sure you can drill a hole and put the old grommet in the new covers. it wouldnt be too hard to do. that way you get chrome ones

i think i'll put a bid up for the ebay ones i mean i could get them for only 22$ technically. the ones i took off my car are a bit bent cuz of all they prying, but if i had 2 stock sets then at least i could choose the 2 LEAST bent ones to put on =)

                            i'll put up a bid.

                            thannx

                              update:

the pushrods did NOT arrive yet from Ftpp.net, imo they are not very fast at shipping their products. Anyhow, i won the valve covers for 22$ shipped so i'm pretty happy with that. When they get here i want to clean them up and paint them, however unlike the intake manifold i don't know how to go about painting the valve covers. Whats a good approach? should i just clean the covers and paint over the old paint? should i sand the old black paint off and then put the new paint on? If i sand it, what grit should i go with? any help will be appreciated, if i don't get a quick answer on this subject i'll probably throw the Q into the apperance section where things like this get answered more readily.

i'm gonna try to get a number of small things done this weekend on the car in preparation to putting the new rockers/pushrods/valve covers on.

Also, I have a friend who is hopefully going to bring over his torch so we can get that stuck bolt out of the EGR flange on the header. He says when we heat it up, it should just turn right out, i hope hes right.
