      Re: Rocker Q's.

grrr went outside this morning and to add to the misery, it had snowed about a foot, looks like i'll be shovelin off my car before i head out to advance auto, i'm gonna pick up all the gaskets i need, egr, valve cover, upper intake.. and some disconnect tools for the fuel lines. Then i'm gonna get at it again. If anyone can answer my previous Q's it would be very helpful, thanx

later~ just got back from advance auto, piced up some plastic tools to remove the fuel line as well as some EGR gaskets, Valve cover gaskets, and last but not least a torque wrench! which i have absolutely no clue how to use =) ....gonna see if i can go get those fuel lines out now...

The fuel lines disconnect above the coil packs like you said, there's rubber boots you peel back to get the tool in there. Then just press and release.

I got one of the manifold bolts out of the head using a bolt-extractor. It looked like a socket, but had sharp teeth inside that dig in when turned counter-clockwise.

Pretty sure there are 8 of those bolts, 4 down each side. 2 or 3 go through the fuel rail. 1 or 2 of them you can't take the whole way out because of the cowl, just lift the plenum and fuel rail out together. You will have to wiggle and pull on that fuel rail to get the injectors up out of the LIM. Some of the O-rings will probably slip off the end and you have to fish them out of the LIM.

 good to know i guess. Rob (rt1) showed me a good pic of his plenum so i could see where all the bolts are, so i do i have to unbolt the fuel rail bolts (theres 2 i think) to get the plenum out? and the injectors just pull out of the lim? how do they go back in? i'm guessin you just push em into place? things are startin to make sense tho... i'm gonna go disconnect the fuel lines, i''ll check back later.

            Re: Rocker Q's.

aight, i got the fuel lines disconnected... piece o cake. Just had to slip in the plastic tool (i used the 3/8 one) and pushed it up til i heard a click and then they just wiggled right off. I also removed the pcv valve and the vacuum line that is attached to it right in the front of the plenum. Thats where i'm at right now.

I'm a little stumped at the next step... there are still some electrical connections and smaller vaccum lines on top of the plenum so should i just disconnect everything i can get my hands on and then undo the bolts and pry that sucker outa there?

            thanx

              Re: Rocker Q's.

There's a bracket on the driver's side of the plenum that holds a bunch of crap like vacuum lines, throttle cable, etc. just unbolt that from the top of the plenum and pull the vacuum lines and set that aside. I think the lines that run to the fuel rail are attached to that front driver's side head stud.

Disconnect the main injector wiring harness connection (on top of the fuel rail) and the MAP sensor connector (under the passenger side of the plenum) unbolt the fuel rail and wiggle the injectors up until that comes loose, then you should be able to lift the whole mess outta there.

If you think it's tough getting the injectors to pull up outta the LIM wait til you go to try and put them back in. A little lube helps those O-rings slide back into the ports but getting them all to line up is the pain.

there is this big plastic thing in the middle of the plenum with an electrical quick connector on each side. Is this the injector wiring harness? Also do i have to touch the FPR at all? Are there any bolts holding the actual injectors iin place of are they just kinda stuck down in there and you need to wiggle and pull them? Ive heard not all the plenum bolts have enough clearance to come fully out, so just unscrew as much as possible and then try to lift that thiing outa there right?

i'm not gonna get at it today as it's new years day and it snowed again so i dont feel like shoveling my car off  so i'm just gonna sit back and read up in my Haynes Manual and then hopefully tomorrow i can get that plenum out!

                thanx

                      Another update

I went out into the blistering cold this morning and i was able to disconnect more vacuum lines and electrical connectors as well as getting out 6 plenum bolts (1 had to stay in the plenum cuz its too long to get out) and the 2 fuel rail bolts. So i'm basically down to the injectors and then i can get this sucker out right???
The electrical connectors on top of the injectors have me stumped! how do you get them off? there is a metal tab that looks like it might have something to do with it, but i'm not sure.

Can anyone help me get these injectors/connectors outa there?

also today did not come without a price.... i broke a plastic piece that hooks up to a vaccuum line so i might have to glue it in place or tape it when i put it back together. =(

any help would be very much appreciated.

                        Re: Rocker Q's.

If you disconnect the main injector harness you don't have to unplug each individual injector. That's the big plastic connector on top of the fuel rail.

You have to unbolt the fuel rail from the plenum to get "wiggle room" so that you can work the injectors nozzles out of the LIM. The injectors are attached to the fuel rail with clips that turn 90°. You can't see the clips very well while the fuel rail is in the car, but there's really no need to remove them unless you're changing the injectors. Just pull the plenum, rail and injectors out as one.

If you did want to pull the electrical connector off the injector, there's a metal clip you pull out on and at the same time pull the connector up. Like I said, really no reason to however, just disconnect the main.

                          Re: Rocker Q's.

ok i have disconnected the main electrical connectors, which means now all i have to do is pull out the injectors and leave them attached to the connectors. So whats keeping the injectors in place? are they just pushed down in there? whats the best way to get them out... some of them are pretty hard to reach.

                          thanx

btw zahn, do you know where i can find a screw extractor like you said with the teeth cuz all i can find are the ones that you screw into the bolt with the reverse thread.

Look for a bolt extractor or a stud extractor, not a screw extractor.

The O-rings on the end of the injector nozzle like to stick in the LIM. You will need to pull/twist/wiggle on the fuel rail until all of the injector ends come free. You will think you're going to break something but just keep working it side to side, front to back, alternate as you're pulling up. Note that the tops of the injectors will remain in the fuel rail. It will look like a cow's udder with the fuel rail and all 6 injectors hanging off the bottom.

SOUNDS GOOD, I ACTUALLY LEFT 2 BOLTS IN THE PLENUM SO I'M GONNA GET THOSE SUCKERS OUT AND THEN TOMORROW I'LL TRY AT THE INJECTORS, I WILL UPDATE AFTER I TRY THAT.

ok i have all 10 bolts out of the plenum, and it is definitely broken loose of the lim, but i cant get the fuel rail to budge! there is only the two bolts that hold it down correct?? i see a torx bolt on top of it but i dont think thats holding it down. Any ideas? the Fuel rail is that metal platform in the middle of the plenum where the fpr is located i mean right? I know that sounds dumb but i need to know how to get this thing outa there. If i can't get the fuel rail to budge i'll never get those injectors out.
