  • Uh Ohh......

Well, we got the cam installed. Put it all back together and there's 3 bolts still hanging around in our bolt pan :(. Figured, what the heck, let's crank it. It backfires like crazy, and won't even idle. It'll clear up at about ~1700RPMs and sounds perfectly fine, but you let off the gas and it'll start popping at ya and usually dies. After having it run for a few minutes, it runs better and is even able to idle, but still popping below 1700RPMs :(. I need to get the thing scanned, but figured you guys might have an idea as to what's wrong. I put the GT2 cam in, with all new gaskets and a new timing chain. Supposedly this cam is safe with stock internals, and my 3 week period for the install suddenly was crushed down to 2 days, so I had to get it done ASAP. We thought we might have crossed some plug wires, but then why would it run just fine at ~1700RPMs and higher? I can cleanly rev it up to the limiter and have no problems at all. I took it for a test drive the other day, and as soon as there's a load on the engine, it backfires like crazy again, and this time won't clear up until ~4000RPMs :(. My uncle thinks my intake manifold isn't bolted on all the way and is causing a big leak, which would make sense; my dad hopes it's just the plugs crossed, so we don't have to tear it down again. Any input? We made sure everything was perfectly aligned with the timing chain and all.

BTW- after a bit of tinkering and letting it run, she decided to idle nicely for a few minutes. The sound was heavenly  . Sound clip will definitely be proceeding her completion!!

        Re: Uh Ohh......

I'll snap a pic tomorrow. My buddy let me borrow his shop for the weekend to do the swap, and it's still sitting outside the shop. I don't have HP Tuners, because I was told this cam will work with a stock tune and valvetrain. I'm pretty sure there's a scanner at the shop, but I hate to use it without him there, so I'll see if he can hook it up tomorrow.

BTW- what are the torque numbers for the intake? I read on here it was like 11ft/lbs or something, but that seems extremely low to me. I'm thinking this is my problem :(. I think a chilton's manual will be on my shopping list tomorrow.

          Re: Uh Ohh......

I have heard of some people running a stock tune on the gt2 BUT even with a mild cam you need a tune so it will run smoother and so you can take full advantage of it.

My first guess is that your problem might have to do with the fact you didnt put it together like it came apart, lol.

Good luck getting it running right.

WOOHOOO!!! She runs! We had the passenger's side plug wires all f'ed up. My uncled crawled in the engine bay and followed them all around to their plugs and made sure they were right, got in the seat and cranked her right up. Idles fine and everything! Only problem is my power steering :(. When we were putting it back together, my dad put the pulley on backwards, so the pulley press started pulling the power steering shaft out, and ruined the shaft's seal. It's driveable, but the power steering pump is dying and won't hold fluid for long. Already ordered one through Advanced Auto Parts, I'm picking it up and installing it tomorrow. Sound clip will follow in a few minutes.

Sounds good. are you getting any SES lights for random misfires. I thought the GT2 would set off codes at idle, if the idle wasn't tuned up through HPtuners. Good job.

I've got a SES light, but haven't gotten it scanned yet. I still haven't gotten another O2 sim for my car, so the light's going to stay on :(

                            Re: Uh Ohh......

OK, problem. There seems to be a pretty decent leak coming from my tensioner assembly. The first time, a O-ring split when I installed it. I pulled it off and replaced it with a better fitting one. Put it back on, and now, 2 days later, I'm out of coolant again. I don't know if I damaged that plastic elbow while fixing the O-ring, but it won't hold coolant for long. Any suggestions? It was leaking from the metal tube like on the bottom of the tensioner assembly the first time. I'm thinking it didn't seal up well this time too, but I'm not too sure. I know it looks like that piece should be about another 1/2" in, but the whole assembly is snug against the block, there's no way it can go in anymore? Also, I have a grinding like noise coming from the front end now. I can feel it in the floor board and the pedal on the drivers' side, but my passengers claim to not feel it, but can hear it. It only does it when I come to a stop, take off, or at ~2K RPMs. I'm sure my shocks are completely dead (103K and still stock), so I'm thinking they may be the culprit. Any input?

it sounds like the bolts are the old cam gear bolts, the mis is cause the cam gear is off a tooth and the you have warped rotors
