  • Basicly a Rebuild of a 3.4

Well basicly i'm going to be tearing my 3.4 completely down and rebuilding it. I'll be doing the entire top end gaskets block up. and new rod bearings and i thought that i might as well do the main bearing while i'm in there right? I've been thinking on it and its going to be easier to just pull the damn thing as i've thought about just trying it in the car. I'm thinking about a new high volume oil pump too, i think i'll leave the timing chain alone as i'm not very skilled at timing vehicles.. and money permitting a 3400 top end swap, or atleast something to the stock heads. I've compiled the following parts list as a basis to go off of, and i would like some advice for the rebuild and on the parts list. thanks

Head Gasket Set (HGs, intake, and exaust mani gaskets and all the needed ones from block up)
    Felpro Head Bolt Set
    Clevite Rod Bearing

I'm hoping that i can pull this off all on my own, and by summers dawn. I would hate to have this sitting during the summer lol.

you cannot do the main bearings without taking the timing chain off. And in all honesty, there are harder things that you are lookin to do, than replace the timing set (chain, gears). You will also need a conversion gasket set if you are taking apart the bottom end (includes all the gaskets that the head gasket set doesnt... combined they make a full gasket set, which is how you have to buy it for our 3.4's). If you are doing a stock rebuilt, there is no need for a high volume oil pump. replace the oil pump shaft and maybe the screen while you are at it (last time i looked, ~ $20 ).

Quite honestly, the top end swap would give you pretty good gains, but I'm not sure if its something you want to tackle. I would stick with the factory top end, change the cam, and do bolt ons (headers, intake, maybe roller rockers).

Hi I'm have started to do the same thing Heads have been matched ported and polished already, and I'm going for cams, slightly larger injectors, headers, full roller rockers etc..... but it ain't easy,it takes alot to get the engine out then dismantling is another but if your not a mechanic or don't know the whereabouts proceed with caution and take extremely good notes as you dismantle.
All the best to you and your project.
