  • ball park $ for rebuild

i've been seriously considering rebuilding my engine lately. my engine doesn't need a rebuild or anything it's just that i've been reading up on swapping 3500 heads & intake to a 3.4. i was thinking that to minimize down time i could get a junkyard 3.4L and strip it down to the block. get it hot tanked, bored, etc. throw some federal-mogul hypereutectic pistons (11.5:1 cr?) in it...
basically rebuild the whole bottom end .020 over and throw a big cam in it, then bolt the 3500 heads & intake on it.
i've helped swap engines & rebuilt dirt bike engines etc. so i think i could do everything aside from machining by myself (and the support of this website haha)
first off the inevitable noob question haha
how much horsepower would a setup like that yield? i'm thinking like 225-250 rwhp but i really don't know

and more importantly, would i be able to build that ^ engine for less than $2000??

well my bro's got a 3.8 bird that i've driven plenty of times and i wasn't all that impressed. i'd rather stick with a souped up 3.4

really... most people say they feel a difference between the 3.4 and the 3.8... plus, like the 3,8 joshbird posted, they are only a couple hundred... the one he posted had 71k i think and was only $550... you could spent the rest modding that

alright i'll admit it that is a good deal haha
but i've heard a 3.8 swap is just as involved as a lt1 swap
                  and most importantly i don't want a 3.8, i want something unique

Surpercharge it and add your own touch to certain things on the car

My 3.4 is bored .020 over, cammed, with forged internals. New pistons, new valvetrain, P&P heads, 19lb injectors, headers, catco, borla, K&N and a bunch of other goodies. Desktop Dyno estimates my car at 225 HP. With some work, I can get some more out of it. A complete list of my mods are on my cardomain site (link in .sig).

If you do a lot of the work yourself, I think you could get away with around $2,000. A lot of that depends on the quality of parts you buy and what you reuse. I lost the breakdown of the cost of parts for my car so I cannot firm that up any more for you.

looks like you've got more than $2k into your engine haha
i thought you were just heads & cam, didn't realize you had forged internals and all that good stuff. so what are you doing for tuning? just 19lb injectors and an afpr? seems a little limited for your setup.
                          btw that's one cleannn 3.4

Yeah, a lot more. I also paid a race engine builder to do the work.

Stocker tune right now. I really have not decided which way I want to go. MS offers a little more, but much more of a PIA than shipping out the PCM. I have a few more mods to take care of before I make that decision.

And thanks. I take a lot of pride in keeping her looking nice. She has never seen a winter.
