      Re: Knock Knock!

The oil pan can come off with the motor in the car for the 3rd gen fbods, can you in the 4th gens too?

If so, pull the pan and see, gaskets are cheap.

also you can go to the nearest auto parts or sears and purchase a 3 or 4 dollar mechanics stethescope and put it on the engine block to see if its there. if you have a good enough ear you can put it on individual cylinders and tell which exsct one it is. i use one at my shop all the time the work really good/

              Re: Knock Knock!

My old engine to a dump on me. Sounded exactly like that. Upon inspection and stripping the motor down on a stand, We discovered it was a rod bearing, junked that motor, people said that it would be to much over for the crank to be reground (didn't want to do that any way, having reground crank and going FI is not what I wanted). Also found some nice shavings in the oil pickup tube and the oil was all glossy like.

Heres a video of I guess what to look for if you end up at this stage

See how that sounds, imagine that 1000-4000 rpms, a nightmare and sound of despair.

OK, you want seriousness and on post... pull the freaking covers off and look. Pull the oil pan and look feel and shake, do the same with valve covers. If you don't find anything pull the heads and then pull the pistons... until you find the culprit.
If we were standing there listening to it, it still would only be an educated guess. You would still have to pull it and check it out.

Car wasn't torn apart completely that day, just the front of the engine. Timing chain and everything looks fine. Just got it into the shed yesterday and started pulling the top-end off. Hoping to get the motor pulled next weekend, and then pull the heads and such and check out the pistons. I'll get back with you guys :)

                                Re: Knock Knock!

Mine was doing the same exact thing when I lost 2 lobes on my crane cam. I wouldn't do it at idle but as soon as the rpm's came up it start knocking. I would pull the valve covers and see if you have a loose rocker. If you do its either a bad lifter or you lost a lobe or 2 on your cam. This is much easier to check for then a bad rod. Obviously if its not something with the valvetrain, you have bigger problems. But I'd check that first.

On a side not this thread was really long, so I didn't read every post. Sorry if someone already recommended this.
