    Re: Knock Knock!

OK, thought I might start pulling the motor apart today to find the problem, and figured I'd check the oil and such. Coolant is completely gone; it had coolant leaks before, and that's why we pulled it apart in the first place. When we were done, it was holding coolant no problem. There's no leak under the car, so it must be in the engine some where :(. Also, some of my oil has dissapeared. It's down about 1 1/2 quarts. The oil is also very very dark, almost solid black. The oil and filter are only a few days old; probably have ~500 miles max on them! Again, there's no puddles under the car.....

As for the cam, it is recommended as a safe stock internal cam. Supposed to work with a stock tune even.

the cam is fine, that was just a bunch of nonsense, and misinformation.

Ok man, first, i feel sad for you:( to me sounds a lot like a rod, let's think a little bit more, when the noise started?, have you overrevved it?, do you run it with oil level low? those are 2 ways the rods can go bad. or just started to make noise from a day to another. more information needed... how the engine started to make this noise

Coolant in the oil will trash bearings in a hurry.

            Re: Knock Knock!

Pulled the dipstick out, and the oil doesn't look milky. Like I said, it's very dark; too dark for how new it is IMO. Just put a new oil pan in it when I put the came in, my old one was smashed in and I lost about 1/2quart of oil capacity from that. But, since the swap, it's been full. I did the swap about 2 week sbefore this happened, but only been driving it for about a week; fixed a coolant leak, put the cam in, new gaskets, then the water pump went out the 2nd day it was back running. Fixed that, and then drove it fine for about a week. Then the knocking started; I was messing around with another FireBird, just doing some small pulls on the road. We did from like 2K RPMs to about 3500RPMs twice. Pull up to a light and hear the knocking. At first I thought it was just my imagination, so I kept driving, but I kept hearing it, so I pulled over about 2 blocks down the road. Had to be at work in 1/2 an hour and had no other way of getting it home, so I took back roads home; kept the RPMs under 2K the whole way there. Has had constant oil pressure as shown in the video; just a tad under 60PSI. Like I said though, it has lost oil and coolant, and the oil seems really dark for fairly new oil.

              Re: Knock Knock!

did you check the balancer??? and did you use assembly lube on the new cam/lifters? did you run it for 20min with conventional oil and then change it...and put conventional oil in it again(new cams don't like synthetic)???

I just watched the video again...Thats the balancer 100% sure not a single doubt in my mind. If it was a rod you would have a misfire and an SES light

Did use lube on the cam, didn't change the lifters. Didn't run it with oil and then change it, just filled it up and went. The cam isn't new, it's used, but was in good condition; no scrapes or anything and barely any signs of being used. I think we're going to try and pull it apart next weekend, if it's the balancer, than that's no big deal. I may just pull the whole thing out and plug the oil holes.

                  Re: Knock Knock!

i agree it is the balancer because when the pulley is under load is the time it knocks and as soon as you release the throttle it stops knocking.
cant wait till my lt1 and nitrous.

When he lets go of the throttle and walks away from the engine around the :15-:14 mark you can hear three more taps. My bet is still a rod.

ummm how about I HAVE a 3.8 Buick LeSabre, that did the same exact thing...so lets just try this grab the ****ing belt and see if it has slop in it, move it back and forth to see if any pulleys move. So STFU and go try it..it takes 5 freaking seconds

My bad night rider, didn't see your post. I did that the first day I heard the sound and I can't move the belt at all. It's nice and snug, can't turn it, pull it, nothing.....
