The motor currently in my car is suffering. I have a slightly chipped #6 piston, and though it runs fine, i know it can go at any time. Luckily yesterday i ran across a low milage 3.8 out of a 2000 model camaro. Its going to be crated up and sent to me this weekend. While im waiting for taxes im going to try and do a few things to it.
ive decied to go with the gt2 cam, 105 spings and retainers, and pacesetter headers.
well i set on these 1.9's so i dont think im going to consider a cam. Heads are a bit out of my price range. Im thinking 1.9's and possiably headers. Then i was looking for any small (ie cheap) things i could do while the motor is out.
I was originally thinking of 1.9s I hear they give decent gains...however if you already have the engine out and are doing the springs etc...I think you would benefit more from a cam...especially beause it will be easy to install
im not an expert, but i wouldnt recommend slapping diff pushrods in an engine just because their longer. with a completely stock engine you can begin to guess what lengths might work. if you do go to a longer pushrod you will need a larger ratio rocker to maintain correct geometry. comp cams has a good write up on pushrod length on their web site.
i dont have much experience w/ valvetrains but i now see that you can generate more lift w/ larger ratio rockers w/out touching the pushrods. you said you were going with 90lb springs. Is that the seat load at 1.900" lift?
only problem with a cam, is all the other costs that come with it. also i dare not think about messing with the timing chain and all...that scares me
I dont believe you have to do you timing chain if you just doin a cam...all depends on how radical you go though...to be honest I would do research into getting a cam and see exactly what you need to get done...if you are replacing your springs, and valves and retainers for rocker arms...the only thing more that you would really need to do for a cam is add tuning, and possibly lifters...since you have the engine out it is really worth while to look into, it will more or less be close in the amount of work you will need to do IMO, and the gains will be more...once the engine is in the car, its a whole diff story lol
techsan23, ive heard either 90's or 105's are ok. they say the 105's wont ramp as fast, but are a little safer. after a little research im gonna stick with the 90's. ive had a friend that has been running this combo for 3 years with no problems, even using stock retainers.
Letzride, i really would like to do a cam swap. at the very least the timing chain and such as to be pulled and put back on. thats were i start to get a little scary for me. i have a friend that will do the tuning for me, so thats no a problem. i just hate to go that far into the engine.
It really won't be as expensive as you think.. as long as you don't bring it to a shop it's not bad.
The cam is lets say $300.. Then depending what type of cam, assuming you want something at least worth your time but not too crazy, you would need to upgrade springs/retainers, which can be had for a good price in the for sale section on this site, ls1tech, ls1.com, etc. New timing chain set ~$100 new, and a cam install kit (includes all gaskets etc) like from zzp $80. So that is about $500.. there would probably be a few other small things but that is a rough estimate. A big part of getting a cam that messes people up is the tuning, because most reputable places charge like $400 and HPTuners is $500.. if you can get your friend to do it, there you go.
Honestly I would do a cam upgrade.. GT2 or the abbott N/A cam.
You'll be sorry down the road that you had your engine out and you didn't do the cam.. trust me.. lol
Well it looks like the rockers are not going to be aviable, and xmetallicaxguitaristx has talked me into a cam install. I have a couple friends that have experiance and would help, so that part is covered. Ive put up a wanted add in the wanted section for a cam and cam parts. I hope to save some by getting some of it used. So if anyone has something or knows of someone that does, let me know on here or pm me. Thanks for all the help guys.
Hello every one, ozzy here ive been looking at this page for weeks now finally joined. So my question is why is it that every turbo build forum just ends...
Just ordered some Toyo 315/35/17 tires for my 17x11 rims. Hopefully I can get them on the beginning of next year. Will post pics.
