this is not related to the v6 camaros, but a general question.

basically i have a 355 with a comp cams 280h cam.. im thinking of going bigger, but i have some concerns

the block is milled down, and the pistons are domed

the specs of the current cam are 230 duration @ 50 and .480 lift

im thinking of getting a 292 comp cams magnum (or the cam similar to that) but im afraid that a valve might get murdered by a piston

its got the 462 heads on it also.. is there any way i can find out if i can run a bigger cam with no problems?

    Re: cam question

you got a great cam, i can't see why run a bigger cam, before that, you need to port the 462 heads and install larger valves on it, or better yet, a set of AFR 180 or 200cc are nice, better intake, headers, maybe MSD, a demon 650 CFM carb would be fine, aluminum 1.6:1 roller rockers would be fine too. There is many problems when you're going to run a bigger cam, first one is that you`ll lose low end power and torque, you'll need a higher stall converter, another one is the P/V clearance, many times you need pistons with valve reliefs for specific application, when you go to a bigger cam you need stiffer springs to prevent valve float at high RPMs, a lighter valvetrain is also recommended. and the 292 magnum lift is .501 i'm not sure about the P/V clearance with the pistons you're running, you're running a nice CR for the heads and pistons, so CR wont be a problem if you're going for that cam.

      Re: cam question

thats what im saying, im afraid of putting a larger cam in there with the clearance.

you sure about the 1.6 rockers though?

how much more will they open the valve?

i put a sparkplug in, it was only about 1/16" larger than the old, and when i took it back out, the gap was closed, so it is VERY tight, 12.5:1 comp

          Re: cam question

You can put a .500 lift cam in a stock SBC with no problems. If you have domed pistons, I'm sure they have valve reliefs deeper then stock.
