  • cam setup question

ok so i have decided what i want to do with my motor. I am sure i want to go n/a and see if i can get real numbers from v6 without NO2 or Forced induction. anyways, i don't want to go extreme, i want to stay mild with the setup. I would also like to stay with a stock tune if possible, but if its NOT AT ALL possible to run a stock tune with this, i would get a dyno tune.
anyways here is what i have my heart pretty set on getting, I've reseached into it alot, but if you have a suggestion for a different cam, let me know.

anyways ill list my current mods first.
    msd 8.5 plug wires
    ngk iridium plugs
    custom cold air induction
    pacesetter headers
    3" piping
    deleted cat
cherry bomb muffler (not a glasspack)
throttle body spacer w/ coolant block off
    160 degree thermostat

and here is what i want to do as far as internals.
    LS6 90 lb valvesprings w/ ls1 retainers
    roller lifters from comp cams
1.7 ratio crane cams roller rockers
    comp cams forged pushrods
    ZZP GT1 camshaft
    . 210°/210° at .050"

    · Intake Lift .317" (.507" lift at 1.6:1 rocker ratio)

    · Exhaust Lift .317" (.507" lift at 1.6:1 rocker ratio)

    · 113 LSA

should i ditch the roller rockers? or will they still help? and would i need a new timing belt set? or could i safley run the stock one? is this cam mild enough for a stock tune, if not, any suggestions to a milder cam would be appriciated.

    Re: cam setup question

I would get a retune after any type of cam swap, but that just me.

yes, the rockers will still help your setup, not a ton, but they are lighter than stock (which are monsters).

Personally, I guess, I dont see why going thru the hassle of doing a cam swap for just a very mild cam. You could throw on a set of 1.9 rockers and get similar gains.

^get that cam. It held the cam-only record with no tune for a long time, with stock rockers too

is it made by comp cams or zzp or any other company? because i would prefer not to get a custom grind

it is a custom grind...but if you'd rather have a brand name cam than a fast cam-only, stock tune car, then i guess you really aren't as concerned with "getting real numbers with a V6" as you said you were in your OP.

The cam I suggested, with 3.73s and DRs, went 13.6 in the 1/4-mile..i can promise you no zzp or comp cams car is running that fast with a stock tune. But w/e...have fun sitting in the mid-14s with your brand name cam and no tune

Ditch the GT1, go with the GT2 or Abbott's N/A. Both are nice stock tune cams, that many people run. IMO, the lifters are a waste of money. You're shelling out $300 or so for them, and will only get a few more HP out of them. Valve springs and retainers look good, push-rods and lifters aren't really needed. I just put the GT2 in my car with completely stock internals @ 102K miles. It's now sitting in my driveway not running because I blew a head gasket :( internals are fine though :). What year and mileage is on your car? I'd definitely recommend a timing chain swap, or at least the tensioner. Do you plan on installing all this yourself or no? What I would do, is pick up an extra set of heads too, and clean them up and port them a bit. Doesn't have to be anything big, just open them up some more in a few places; a bit of research will give you a good idea as to what to do. Then gasket match the intake manifolds too if you can, that way they'll flow a bit more. All that should be drivable on a stock tune, but of course a dyno-tune will yield the best results :)

                      Re: cam setup question

I'll never do a cam swap without tuning ever again. We did on my girls T/A and she ran rich as ****. MPH in the 1/4 is 104. Which is lower than stock I think.

As long as you don't have a check engine light one - you pass the sniffer. AFAIK they don't even "sniff" cars anymore. Maybe its different depending on where you live, but in IL they don't.

The OP is in FL, where vehicles don't have to pass inspection. At least, not now

As for your g/f's cam troubles, it depends on the type of cam and stock tune. Some cars run fine on stock tune with a mild cam, while others won't run well at all with a cam swap.

ok so ive looked into the 1.9 ratio roller rockers, and they look like they would yeild some good results, the only thing is, would i be safer running the stock valvesprings or the ls6 ones? and also i guess if i get the 1.9's i would need some new forged pushrods of a different length because of the added stress put on by the 1.9's, which rods do yall suggest? (i figure ill do rocker arms now to hold me over and wait to get a cam in a year or 2)

1.9 rockers cost as much as a cam, and yeild half the benefits. Do it right, or not at all
