  • 4.2 Stroker Vs. LS1

I got a 98 camaro, i was debating wheather i should stroke my 3.8 to a 4.2 or drop in an ls1. .. .. the stroker kit is about 2500. LS1's run about the same but then theres like 3 grand of extras i have to get. .. .. but they produce way more power. Any one here done either? if so can up some pics and detail about the conversion and/or stroker kit.

I havent done either but if you did the stroker kit you could rebuild you engine so you would have a pretty much brand new engine. Than instead of having to spend 3grand on parts to make a LS1 mount up right you could buy a pro charger and then you would be making more power than a LS1 for sure.

If it were me, I'd do the stroker. Just because it's something different. You look around for people asking about more power, and everyone suggests a LS1. I say screw it, be the freak and stand out from the rest of the crowd :) Go with the stroker

The stroker kit itself is that much but then if your going to go that far you may as well do heads, manifolds and valvetrain to make it really worth it. Now your right back to LS1 territory. Toss up either way but if I had 7500 to put towards it, it would be a stroker.
Let's flip a coin. Heads I get tail, Tails I get head.

wow i didnt even know a kit like this existed. well...one more thing to add to my to do list. now for the question everyone always asks....*sigh*....how much hp would an otherwise stock stroked 4.2 make? yes it probably depends on many things, im simply looking for an estimate.

~60hp more than a stock engine with a stroker. The thing with strokers is the torque you gain though, much better than stock :)

so you'd be in the same range as the LT-1 if your gaining ~60hp and considerably more torque

What about the zzp kit? http://www.zzperformance.com/grand_p...=230&catid=109 its only $1450, but then again its only 4.05L

well, i vote go with the stroked 4.2

my question though is that 3800stroked offers a 10.1:1 compression ratio and a 8.2:1 compression ratio for power adder aplications. ZZP's kit's compression ratio raises it up to 10.2:1, and they say you will be fine running 6-10psi with their kit. so would one be safe running 6-10psi on the 3800stroked 10.1:1 kit?

so youre saying a stroked 4.2 will make 230whp?? zzp says with their 4.05L stroker kit you'll make about 9% more hp than with the normal 3.8, which is only 185whp. how does the 4.2 dish out so much more than the 4.05? shouldnt it be proportional?

LS1 would be cheaper and you'll get more power

                              4.2 would be alot cooler
