Ok I'm looking to do both cams and heads so Im going to a few shops today to get final prices on things and ultimatley make my decision in the next few days. Is it worth it to do both the cams and heads at the same time? Like will this save me money...or can I do them one at a time...Im thinking that if I do them seperatly I should do the heads first, since they are going to come with springs, retainers, valves, etc. that Im going to need to replace if I get a cam. Am I thinking right here?

Re: cam and heads
If you're going to do only one at a time, I would recommend the heads (w/ upgraded valvetrain) first. That way when you get the cam installed, you shouldn't have to worry about valvetrain woes when mashing the loud pedal.'99 Mountaineer AWD 5.0 - 4300K HID, Some Bolt-ons

Re: cam and heads
you'll save money by doing both at the same time. That way they don't have to tear off your upper end twice, just once. Don't have to get the gaskets 2x, don't have to try and not lose things 2x, try and get everything lined up right 2x, etc. It's just easier to do it all at once, trust me.Last edited by RadRacer; 02-07-2008, 01:46 PM.~97 3.8L V6 Camaro~

Re: cam and heads
so when they do the cam install how much more work has to be done to do the heads since they are already torn into the engine? Should I be looking at some sort of a discount price cause the labour is less? I got a quote of 600$ to do a cam installation Im gunna hopefully drive out to talk to the guy more about it 2morrow, just curious as to how much more I should probably be expecting to pay when I add head installation in.
(BTW I read the head and cam installation process in one of the threads, but since Im not that mechanically inclined Im still unsure so thats why Im asking)

Re: cam and heads
If your going to do the cam, do the heads at the same time. In order to replace the cam you have to remove the valve covers, rockers, pushrods anyway so all thats left is to unbolt the headers and the head bolts. Your spend twice as much to do it separately.69 Camaro 350 4spd, Full Hotchkis susp, Baer brakes, moser 12 bolt, Flowmaster

96 RS Hotchkis STB, subframe connectors, Hotchkis LCA and adj Panhard rod, SS camaro sway bars, Bilstein shocks, powerslot rotors, Borla exhaust, rksport headers, k@nFIPK

Re: cam and heads
They shouldn't charge you anything extra. If they do, it shouldn't be much; all they have to do is take off the heads and exhaust manifolds, everything else is out of the way already.~97 3.8L V6 Camaro~

Re: cam and heads
how bad would it be if I got cams and heads done without having my gears or LSD done...whats the worst that could happen...Im kinda torn right now, I have to do one or the other...I really really wanna go the cam/heads route cause I want the power and that sweet sound
