so i have always wondered this, with cam installs that some of you get do u waste a noticeable amount more of gas? and does it really make that much of a difference in horsepower? i guess the jist of this is if it is really worth it?

    Re: cam gas mileage

I haven't figured my mileage yet (will in a couple more days though), but I know I'm rich as hell at idle. I haven't gotten it tuned yet, but with a good tune you shouldn't see much difference in MPG, as long as you keep your foot out of the floor :P

yes a cam is going to cause you to get worse MPG, the higher the duration means your valve is open longer, which means more air can get in, which will cause more fuel to enter also

it shouldnt be to drastic though, but i have heard a lot of video clips of a v6 camaro that sounded WAY over cammed, they must be getting horrible gas mileage

        My car had 4.10s, 3500 converter, and 210/220 112lsa cam and I got 20mpg average with about 50/50 city/hwy

so is there a "perfect" duration cam that will get you a decent hp gain without sacrificing to much gas?

These are the two questions I care about. Someone answer this. Stock V6 engine with a K&N and Whisper lid.

depends on which cam you get. They'll definetly add power, because it gets more air and fuel into the chamber, but how much power, its hard to say. Again, depends on which cam you get...depending on future plans a cam may or may not be worth it. What are your plans?

My plans, pay off bills, finish restoring condo, get business rolling, work on car. Once I get to that last one it includes a whole rebuild with a GT2 cam, stage 3 heads and intake.

My car made 186rwhp and 210rwtq on my stock motor with full exhaust and lid. With my built motor with my cam and stage 1 heads and intake I made 230rwhp and 230rwtq with a okay tune.. I only had a Maf Translater plus. I was still rocking stock rev limiter and if I had HPtuners I could have really tuned my motor.. Now with your stage 3 heads and bigger cam you could probably make close to 300rwhp with a tune.. Usually a good head and cam package could get you 30+hp and tq..

Are you going to stay all motor? I would go all the way with it.. get a good stocker kit with a huge cam and great heads.. My cam was a 210indur, 220exdur ,534inlift, 547exlift, 113l/s.. That was a pretty big cam back in the day.. I should have gone bigger but I didnt. With my setup I was getting 25mpg city and highway.. That was a 5speed with 4.10's..

                          Re: cam gas mileage

I actually got the best mileage ever in my car w/ the cam. Highway crusing averaged 32ish mpg driving from Chicago to CT.

Well, I just gassed up and calculated my mileage: 21.93MPG city driving :) This is a 97 5-speed w/3.73's, bolt-ons, polished intakes, and cam. I'm working on getting a set of heads next :)
