is a cam worth it? that is something you have to ask yourself. no one here can tell you if its worth it. do you want the 20-40hp gain (depending on cam intensity/prior setup) and the awesome sound that comes with it? for me, a cam is far more than worth it, but to you? well, it all comes down to whats important to you in a car and if you're willing to drop the cash for it.

full bolt-ons :P. Atleast exhaust and intake, or else the motor won't breathe as well and the cam will be practiaclly pointless. Then you'll need new gaskets, new valve springs, new retainers, new tensioner, etc. A cam is by no means a cheap part; after everything's said and done, it's roughjly $1K.

That depends on if you have access to tuning or not

A cam is by no means a cheap part; after everything's said and done, it's roughjly $1K.

On parts specifically relating to the cam, I spent about $600

make sense; not sure of an install price, but dyno-tune would be roughly $400.

I priced my stuff roughly like this:
Cam $300
Install $600
tuning $500
new lifters $150
stiffer springs $80
retainers $35.00
push rods- $69.99
zzp install kit 79.99
double roller timing chain $180
$300 labour to install springs and crap like that...

grand total (might be missing some stuff) around $2300

It was something like that...I might be missing stuff or added something I dont need in there cause I was looking at getting heads done as well and I quickly tried to deduct the parts I need for heads in there...

The bolded is what I did not pay for and my cam was more 250ish, since it was part of a GP. Also, I got all new motor gaskets, which bumped my total costs into the 500's or so...So, I retract my previous statement that my cam-specific stuff cost around 600.

I don't think my car was pulling 20MPG city driving with me beating on it when it was stock; I say bolt-ons and cam are good for power and economy :)

depending how you drive you may be able to get better economy...the speed shop over here that has done work on my car has said that they have seen Ls1's with heads and cams done get an average of 30mpg with a 6spd....why?...the more power you have, the less you need to romp the pedal to go as fast as you were before...however some ppl really like to beat on there car more. I think if you drive properly you will see an increase in milage only because you need less pedal to accelerate to speed as quick as before....however if you lay into it you will see less milage cause you will be dumping in alot more fuel.

I know I have seen an increase in milage with the 3.90 gears I have installed (and they say you are supposed to loose milage)...last year at this time I was getting anywhere from 300-350km to a tank...now I am getting 350-400km to a tank....I used to floor it to get on the highway, now all I need is 1/4 throttle and I get the same thrill....really depends on your driving habits. IMO
