  • Sudden power/increase exhaust volume

I head out today; get in the car, crank it up, and get ready to leave. I notice the exhaust sounds different, but figure it's just because it's cold. Leaving the house I notice the car seems to pull alot harder then it did before; I pick up my g/f and she says it sounds alot louder outside too. What do you guys think? I did drag the exhaust on one driveway the other day pretty bad, think it pulled it off? All I know is the car's running alot stronger, but is abit louder. I peaked under real quick at work and didn't notice anything, but I didn't have it up on jackstands or anything. Only thing different about today then yesterday is that there was a slight more overcast, but the temp was around the same.

I'm likin the new sound almost, and don't really want to change anything; but if it's possibly hurting the motor, then I'll try and fix it.

If it's exhaust related.. for example, you scraped a hole into a pipe or cracked it somehow the only thing I can really see you doing is creating less backpressure. As far as I know that won't hurt an engine. You want a quick flow in your exhaust and perhaps you accidentally made that happen.

Pacesetter headers to a mandrel bent 3" cat-less system with a Cherry Bomb vortex muffler. My exhaust is already pretty free-flowing I thought. If it is an exhaust problem, I'll have the spot fixed, and a cut-out welded in, cuz I'm liking the new power :D

Maybe you pinched a pipe a tiny bit and that's closer to what our cars need? Fast flow. Not free flow. That's what everything I've read leads me to believe so far. lol hell, find out what it is exactly.. take pictures and write it up as a do it yourself mod.

You could have damaged the catalytic conveter when it dragged on the ground; you have a factory cat converter i presume?

i would hope he's got a hi-flow, since he has headers and 3" pipe, but if it's stock, you might have broken up the screens inside the cat, but i wouldnt think that would give a noticable change...maybe something that's been discretely "hindering" your engines performance for a while, in some way, has been corrected, and your engine is running stronger because of it? IDK

                  Thank you.

I doubt I dinged up the exhaust to increase the velocity of the air flow. But, I guess you never know. I'm hoping to get her on a lift tomorrow and check it out; if it is a hole, it will be fixed, along with a cut-out; if it's not a hole, then o well, i'll enjoy it while it lasts:banana: Any other suggestions?

                    Re: Sudden power/increase exhaust volume

i don't think a hole is gonna give u any noticeable power....

maybe u had a foreign object stuck in your tail pipe and by hitting the driveway u knocked it out.

                    sounds plausible to me hahahha

No idea really. Hey, post up some sound clips! I'm in the market for a good sounding muffler and all the sound clips I can get the better.

a hole in the exhaust/muffler can do a whole lot

if the hole is at the beginning of the muffler before it gets to the packing/flow crap it will make it louder and decrease the back pressure, which is what you might be feeling

mufflers add a great deal of back pressure, when i run my other car open header, it is wild, and due to the high compression the tach reacts very fast, with the mufflers on it isnt nearly as responsive and just feels like a grandmas car
