  • Freeze plugs for heads

When I got my heads back from being milled, bead blasted, and valve job I didn't noticed that they didn't have the freeze plugs on each side. So I ordered 4 at checker and I think the name was Dormain 1 1/8" frezze plugs, but these are the rubber insert kind instead of the steel and bronze. I went ahead and put them in and tighened the nut on the outside. Just wondering if anyone else has used the rubber type of frezze plug?

The rubber plugs are designed for TEMPORARY use. While they are often used long term, it's not a good idea. You would be best off getting a propper metal plug to press in there. In fact, you should take it to the place that did the heads. Most machine shops replace the freeze plugs on any head they do work on.

I would take the heads back but they are across town. So it would cost me more in gas to have them put in 4 frezze plugs, I think they forgot to put them in since they are a good company to deal with. I'm going to look and see if I can get some steel ones to put in.

I used rubber freeze plugs on my block and they hold up fine for dailey use but if you really get on it hard and build up internal pressure they will pop out. Then your looking for it on side of road or in your undercarriage somewhere and it just leaves you in a bad mood. Get steel ones if you can!

^ I'm just going to put in steel ones, but 1 1/8" steel won't fit , so I'm going to try the 1" steel plugs.

Hey Guys I have a little prob. My car overheated and since has been leaking water from the block. I thought my block would be cracked but a guy told me that only really happens in the winter. There is no water in my oil and no white steam out of the tail pipes so we think the headgasket is intact. A guy told me more then likley a freeze plug popped out. Would that cause my car to drip water out of the block and cause air to get into my cooling system. If so where are they, how many are there, and how do I check them

I know there are 2 on each head, one on front and back. The block has at least 2 or more.

I got the steel freeze plugs in yesterday. They were 1" steel plugs 4 of them. I used some rtv around them, then used a socket to hammer them in. So if someone does a search thats what I did to replace the freeze plugs on the heads. Off the engine of course.

For future reference, the best thing to put on a freeze plug when installing it is GREEN Loctite and Loctite "Primer N". It's expensive, but works great for press-in stuff. Spray the primer on the block and put the green stuff around the freeze plug.
