Can you swap an LS1 into an Pre-98 FBody

[Need4Camaro]

I know of a 96 in great condition that I can have for real cheap, and with $3.5K extra I can have an LS1 Motor and Trans. Of course I'll need a rear end and new fuel pump / fuel lines too - not to mention I have no experience in doing Motor Swaps ...

Car - $1k
Engine/Trans - $3.5k
Rearend - $1k
Fuel Accessories $750
Installation - $2k ??

Total - $8.5k

Forget it, I think I answered my own question, unless someone can teach me how to do an LS1 swap.

The problem is though, there's really no LS1's out where I live :(

...and there's a local 3rd gen. w/ an LS1 in it, too

It should be possible, both the LT1 and LS1 are 5.7L V8, the LS1 is probably a little more bulkier then the LT1.

it's totally possible, but i dont think you'll be able to use the stock air box. i believe that's actually part of the reason the front end changed...the 93-97 hood didnt clear the LS1 air box.

and you can find urself a fine V8 rear for Hella less than $1K...LS1 + trans should be alot less than 3.5K also, shop around man...

I see, where would you recommend I look for these parts? Cheapest I could find was $3.5K on Ebay - everything else was around $5k

I found one for $2.4K at tacreations.com - it has 172K Miles though -
1. How much would I be looking at for a rebiuld?
2. How much for a rearend? I was going to go for a 12 Bolt W/3.42's because I know the rearends in LS1 Cars are weak 10 Bolts
3. How difficult for an average mechanic is it to install and what tools would I need? If it's something I shouldnt touch, how much would a shop charge me?

4.Can I use the stock 96 Speedometer? I honestly would like to keep the 125 MPH speedometer...

Edit #2 : Also I saw two 96 LT1's between $1,100 and $2,200 - Would it be more cost effective to just go use an LT1? Also as far as modding potential goes, How much more would I have to spend to get an LT1 to take out an LS1? Lets say, to get an LT1 in the 400 HP range?

LS1's can do it with full boltons, but would I need a head/cam job with an LT1 to pull it off? Maybe just boltons and a P&P intake could do it?

check out some places like TA creations. i've seen some early model (98-99) LS1's w/ trans go for 22-2400 bucks. check some boneyards too, even if you have to do some driving, the money you save may be well worth it.

yeah, I found two motors

An LS1 for about 2.4K and an LT1 for about 1.1K

Will the 1k of savings be enough to give the LT1 an edge over the LS1 or should I just go with the LS1?

yes it will fit, with 8k you should just get a 98+ Z28 for that price.. unless you like tinkering with things..

Id rather keep the 96 and go pick up a Z28 and have both!.
