  • need help bad with cam install

I just finished installing a new comp cam 210/220 with all of comp cams recommended mods along with some 26lb injectors(they seemed to fit perfect), 105lb springs, lifters...the works and new timing chain and I triple checked all the sprockets before bolting it up. Everything Is torked to spec. Unfortunately there was a mix up with my mail tune so don't have it quite yet but I'm sure someone else is running this cam with out a tune.So First time I fired it up it tried to idle then died. tried it one more time and and it idled for about 4 seconds than rpm fluctuated so I gave it some gas and it smoked a bit from the motor and I turned it off. I doubt that's normally maybe the cam got dry hope not or maybe the oil takes a bit to get to the top, I've got no clue. Really wondering what I should do.

Maybe it is getting to much fuel from the injectors since it is not tuned for them. Is the LS for the cam 112 or 115? Did you degree the cam? I would wait and try the mail order tune but If I were you I would but HPtuners and a wideband so you can get a better tune on it , doing it yourself.

      Where was it smoking from??
      Any particular area?
Did it keep smoking when you got out of the car?

first start up its not going to want to idle, use the gas pedal to keep it running. give the car a few minutes to adjust some stuff, it'll smooth out.

what color smoke? how much? a little smoke wouldnt bother me, you just put a cam in and the PCM has no idea yet. plus like others said, your going to run rich untill you get a tune for the bigger injectors.

          LSA is 118

It wasn't smoking from the top more so from underneith...maybe spill fluids? The cam degreed perfect. When I started it the second time it sounded great as it reved up to 3 grand...could be right and be flooding itself...but wondering if the oil just needs to start flowing abit more to lube everthing up better.

There wasnt a thick cloud of smoke just a bit of black, shut it off the moment it started.
Heh ok I'll give it some time just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to blow it up.

no, your not going to blow anything.

even when you have a vaccum leak, then seal it, the car still sounds cammed for a minute, then slowly smooths out as the PCM adjusts things. its no big deal

let her idle for a while. oil pressure's good? temp is good? just keep an eye on the gauges. let it warm up and see what happens

its possible you got oil/lube/ect on the headers/y-pipe and it just burned off

edit: black smokes sounds like its running rich, which it should be. so dont worry.

so you know, blue smoke is oil, white is coolant/water, and black is fuel.

probably some oil that dripped down and was burning off. Also with new gaskets and such there is going to be a little smoke as things burn in again. And yea you are running rich with those injectors

                Ok Thanks.
Should have the tune in a week and a half roughly with the mix up so won't have to run too long like that. I'll post back once I give it a little more run time.

Re: need help bad with cam install

Well got it running and did the recommended comp cam break in, albeit not very well, at 2k it runs fine at 1k it's a smog machine and doesn't like to idle at all, almost stalls out. So I'll be waiting for my pcm to come back before I drive it. Hope the tune makes a big difference in that. I'm getting pcmforless to tune it, I've never heard of TSP before.

                          texas speed and performance.

its going to run rich now and not really want to idle, the pcm has no idea whats wrong, when really its just the cam, its trying to get it to run smooth with out throwing miss-fire codes and false knock due to the cam. and on top of that, your injectors are now dumping more fuel than your pcm has programmed for so its trying to adjust for that too.

your'll be fine once you get the tuned pcm in. definatly report back.

it took and me my brother forever to get his cammed ls1 to idle, we wanted it around 750-800 but it wouldnt idle below 1100. but it was a big cam.

I run the VS cam 206/216 115 LS and I set the idle at 900 rpms, seems to like it, still has a little lobe to it.

Sounds promising for me. I'll probably keep this one at 1k, comp cams recomended till I can manually tune it. I'll let you know how the tune turns out once the pcm gets back. Thanks again, that was nerve racking, knew it wouldn't start nice just never knew it would be that rough.
