  • Do i to rebuild top end??

im thinking on getting the lifters changed in my 97 firebird and was wondering if i would be better off just doing the whole top end, i am on a fixed budget, i was just wondering what parts would have to be changed or would be more fesable to change (pushrods, rocker arms) while getting the lifters done??and if anyone had a lifter job done ,how much, how long? thanks for the help!!

rockers and push rods dont really go bad. just replace the lifters.

i would say lifters is like a 2 hour job if you know what you are doing

      *cough* *cough* CAM *cough*

Like Meaty said though, generally the stock pushrods and rockers are fine unless you plan on going with a big cam.

Thanks , ill prob just change the lifters then, i priced them today at $46 (GM parts dealer) a peice, is that reasonable or can i get em cheaper somewhere else, and this cam job, how much work is involved in that? someone should really start a thread with some estimated prices and time involed in these things or people who had it done just list what they paid, unless there is and i just didnt see it.

Compcams are cheaper than stockers ;)

There's plenty of threads out there; estimated cost is $1000 or so. Cam=300, then add in springs, retainers, lifters, gaskets and it adds up. I'm running the GT2 cam purely because I didn't have tuning access. I'm also running all stock internals with it (only 25K miles on them though), but still stock rev limiter and such.

check all of your pushrods first

they can go bad by bending, or not being true

haha I must be slow, it took me like 3 days to do a lifter swap but of course this was my first time taking apart a engine.

Rad how are you liking your cam? Did you get a nice power increase?

i'm about to do a Lifter swap myself. i'd like to do a cam, but i'm thinkin i might go with different lifters if they'd be cheaper and do some of the same things. if i ever do a cam, it'd be a mild one for the sound anyway. performance isnt in my plans, gas just costs too much lol
