Re: Newb Question, please dont hurt me

the 3.4 when set up properly will spin 7k befor breaking the crank are you looking for more than that

questing Why is a motor thats designed to shake its self to death(the 3.8) better than a 3.4 breathing properly

attention all 3.8ers gm no longer makes a 90deg v6 there all 60deg just like the 3.4 so get off your high horse and get over it your day is over

what are you talking about "designed to shake itself to death?" the 3.8 is simply more powerful than a 3.4, especially in a big car like an fbody

and the 3.6s gm uses now are quite different than the 3.4s or the 3.8s used over a decade ago. the 3.6 puts out over 250hp and 250lb-ft

and our day is over? wtf? your day is pretty over too. they stopped making our cars 6 years ago. i mean a freaking altima will whip my *** from a stop light and i have the y87 package, cold air intake, headers, high flow cat, ect.

OK, semi hi jacking this thread. What rear drive V6s will bolt into a 93. Mines tired and instead of just a rebuild option, what newer engines will bolt in with the least amount of hassle. Will the S10 V6s and trannies drop in?

no. the s10 stuff wont fit in easily at all. if you want the least amount of hassle, put another 3.4 in it. i would guess the next easiest one to drop in would be the 3.8 but idk what else youd have to do.

My advice is since you already have the 3.4 motor is built it up. Forget replacing the crank. You'll be better off using your money to built your engine to handle some high boost which will give you plenty of power and torque to break traction. What I would do is Port and polish your intake manifold, heads, get a bigger throttle body if you can find one and get a cam and a pulley. By the way the 3.4 makes a great exhaust note. I don't know if you've heard it turboed before but it sounds a lot like the 2JZ Supra! I also agree with you. You don't need a 3.8 or an LS1 to make some power. I have some friends that run the 1jz and sr20s which are way smaller than the 3.4 and they haul ***! But yeah forget the crank. It will reduce your stroke but it will bring a whole lot of tuning problems along with it and you might even have to get a custom grind cam.

+ one on getting rid of the 3.4 and getting 3.8

You can get a 3.8 for like $500.. maybe cheaper.

Re: Newb Question, please dont hurt me

Come on guys! Don't you understand. Sure the 3.8 would be better to mod and can get power more easily. And sure if I could chose between the two I'd chose the 3.8 any day. But that is beyond the point. The point is that this guy got this 3.4 motor dirt cheap and that is why he wants to invest in it and make it perform. I think they best way we could be helpful to this guy at the very least is to tell him how to make power from it or how to invest in it. But by saying oh get an LS1 or get a 3.8 were just sidetracking the guy. I mean that is just my two cents. So to find out for sure why don't we ask him. Monster where you asking how to get some good power from your 3.4? Or where you looking for someone to tell you what a better engine to purchase would be?

Re: Newb Question, please dont hurt me

Thanks for all the replys guys. I was only asking if the 2.8 crank can be bolted in without problems to destroke the motor. Making power isnt a problem at all, been doing it for many years on import cars and decided to do something different for myself with building up a V6 Camaro. I have the 3.4 already and just got a 2.8 bottem end for free, so I will be getting to work really soon on the motor and hopefully I can find a decent 93-94 Camaro to put it into.

Re: Newb Question, please dont hurt me

Do you guys not understand why the 3.4l is a better v6 than the 3.8l in theory? The 3.4l has cylinder offsets of 60 degree's, which does two things for the motor. First, it makes the block smaller, and therefore lighter. Secondly, it makes for a perfectly balanced engine in that the 60* offset complements the 6 cylinders in 360* of rotation. The 3.8l is a v8 block with 2 cylinders cut off of it, which is why it is unbalanced and "designed to shake itself to death". The only reason why the 3.4l in camaros sucked is because GM allowed a group of monkeys to design the intake for it. They have fixed that with the 3400, 3500, and the 3.6VVT engines, all of which are based of the old 3.4l. So stop telling the guy not to bother with the 3.4l until you know your ****. The 3.8l, while not a bad engine, is not god and there is a reason why it was discontinued.

To the OP, I would not suggest going with the 2.8 crank, it would just cause you too many problems with matching up pistons. The 3.4l bottom end is already quite strong, and with spring/rocker/lifter mods it should be capable of turning 7200rpm or slightly more. I think there have been some issues with spun bearing for those trying to go over this point, but that might have been with the fwd blocks. If you want to go 8000rpm+ you are probably going to need to go with a custom forged crank anyways, so the 2.8l crank wouldn't be of much use to you no matter what. But please whatever you do, put the fwd heads on instead of the old iron heads, you'll be kicking yourself if you don't.

Re: Newb Question, please dont hurt me

Yup I agree with oh34 V6. The iron heads and the iron block really does make the GM v6 engines strong! They could already take a considerable amount of boost on stock internals specifically for this reason. Not many companies are making their blocks or heads from Iron anymore instead they now use aluminum. That latest car that I know that was also and Iron block was the Dodge SRT-4 Engine. I'm pretty sure they made it out of iron so it could take high amounts of boost being that they have the Mopar upgrade options that they could get done from their local Dodge Dealer which would include having them put up the PSI. If you really think about it the GM v6 engines are usually always willing to cope with a new installed turbo and a decent amount of boost. After all the GM V6 engines were a new and improved version of the Grand National Engine which was specifically designed to take boost.

oh34v6, thanks for the info. I have the 3.4 and 2.8 bottom end and hopefully I'll get some free time from work to open both the motors up and start doing some homework. I am not worried about getting pistons made for this motor, I have a few friends that work for CP pistons and I get taken care of pretty well with them. I pretty much have an idea for the bottem end already, just gotta make sure everything will work and go from there. I 'll make a thread once I know everything works and everybody will be able to see my progress, even the haters can watch:wavey: And also, I plan on using the aluminum FWD heads. I just need to find some more time to go to the yards and check who has what or get lucky through the forums.

Again thanks for all the info everybody.
