  • replaced I.M. gasket, car wont idle right. air leak?

so i blew the intake manifold gasket, i was losing oil and the car was running hot. so i bought all the parts and got some ziplock bags for screws and bolts and started pulling the engine apart. i replaced the gasket after cleaning everything. and i started putting it all back together again-after i painted my intake manifold and valve covers. got it finished today and went to start up the engine. it turns over but there sounds like there is a vacuum leak or a bad A/F mixture. t.b. gasket is good, and all the bolts are nice and tight. i did put gasket sealer on both sides of the intake manifold gasket. and my fuel pressure is correct. no fuel leaks either. im stumped. does anybody have any ideas?

Don't spray brake cleaner all over the engine when it is running, if it get a spark from the spark plugs , you'll be on fire. Check for vac. leaks and make sure all the connectors are on right and in the right sensor.

where are all the vacuum lines? -99 3.8. and how would i go about checkin them? it sounds like the leak is somewhere around the t.b. but i cant pin point it. it also sounds like its coming from around the alternator. t.b. has a new gasket also

Mines a 96' , so I don't know too much about how the Vac. lines are ran on a 99'. Maybe someone with a 99+ will post. Or if your have a Haynes manual that might help. Good luck.

I'm just gonna throw it out there.. MAF screen wasn't reinstalled? I know on straight throttle bodies that doesn't affect the car as badly as angled ones. And I dunno what a 1999 has anyways.

There are vacuum lines just to the left of the throttle body that run their way back to the map sensor.. and somethin in between there which I just don't know what it is for some reason. Anyways, behind the MAP sensor a line runs from there to the fuel pressure regulator. I can't think of much else off hand right now.

i havent had that screen on there in years lol and it has never giving me a prob, there isnt a vac line to the left of my t.b.
i know what lines your talking about on the manifold and all those were installed correctly. what bothers me is there is a loud noise that sounds like an air leak around the t.b. specifically to the left. but no vac line. unless there is one that ive never seen orheard before on the engine. im getting extremly frusterated because i REALLY dont wanna take all of that apart again, it took two days just to take it apart then reinstall. i fell like it is something very minor that is causing the prob, and im prolly gonna be pissed when the prob is figured out. any other info or suggestions? i really appreciate the help from everybody so far

Theres always the idea of spraying it down with brake cleaner idea. lol Kidding of course , I'm sure it is something simple and you'll find it.
