  • GM's 305 HP V6 - Is it possible to attain that in the 3.8??

The V6 in the 2010 Camaro and the 2008 CTS makes around 305 HP. It's one quick machine. I believe it is capable of so much power due to Direct Injection. If I recall, it also has dual overhead cams. This is a all stock N/A motor which is I believe has slightly less CI's than the 3.8. We're 105 HP shy of that motor though. To get anywere close we'd have to go all out in mods where as this new motor is just bone stock. I want to know is there any way to close the gap while still keeping power potential? It doesn't need a big lopey cam or outragous heads to make 300 HP where as we would need it, a turbo, or additional cubes.

Is Direct Injection whats helping it so much? or is it the dual overhead cam's? Whatever it is, is there any way to impliment it into the 3.8 V6?

Well, for DOHC, you'll have to get a whole different motor pretty much; I don't see how you'd be able to implement that into a single cam motor......

As for direct injection, that's possible. It'll be a big PITA, take lots of research and cash, and probably won't yield as much gain as you expect, so I wouldn't try.

^agreed. the 350z was making 300hp out of a 3.5l, its better engineering. volkswagen"s 1.8t, while turbocharged, makes 180hp, and with a tune to up the boost, makes over 200. like i said, just better engineering in a newer age. the 3.8II was first put in our f-bodies in 1995, almost 15 years ago. its old and outdated.

pushrod, reliable, moderate power, tried and proven=our motor

new, DOHC, direct injection, most power per cubic inch=new camaro motor

if u want 305HP u will have to mod a lot for it, our motors were not design for power like the new motor. when our cars were new GM made a v6 only to help sales but they did not care about v6 performance and did not promote the v6. now they do care about v6 performance and there is a much bigger push for the 6 than the 8. its what 7 years can do...

Our 3800 could totally put out 300hp N/A. Just takes some really deep pockets...engine swap would be cheaper...

bolt-ons, cam (tuned), light head work, and supporting valvetrain can get you there...

THEN you call up the turbo fairy and you're sittin' pretty like smss and blizzard.

also keep in mind that our f-bodies pumped up to 305hp will perform quite well compared to a stock '10 v6 pulling all that extra weight around.

                DOHC means 24 valve in a V6.
24 valve > 12 valve because of increased airflow.
Direct Inject is great because you can advance timing even further without detonation.
                It's a combination of everything.

the new V6 also has a compression ratio of 11.3 to 1 thats pretty high if one is to start with forced induction and nitrous. also G6 or G8 have the same motor lower compression like 10.2 to 1 and are rated at 261HP

The new V6 camaro dynoed 246hp and 220 TQ something like that the graph is in 5th gen.So 246HP and 220TQ can be done easy in our 3.8's. Looks like GM over rated the new V6 Camaro a bit. Ours with weight reduction and some modding would probably out run the new Camaro since they weigh 3700-3800LBS. Take 200-300LBs off your F-Body and you'll have a good run with one, as long as you have bolt -ons , suspension , gears and a cam. Maybe not even all that.

its either over rated, or has 21-22% drivetrain loss :(

I know about the drivetrain loss, but still our cars with some good mods and weight reduction would be a good match for the new Camaro. Just saying 305hp isn't much compared to some of our cammed F-bodys and the weight factor. Mine stock weighed 3300lBS. So about 500LB difference = to about 50HP. Now mine is over 2900 with me in it , so almost 1000lbs with a driver in the New Camaro = 100HP difference. Plus better suspension and gears. So I'm not impressed about the new Camaro, once I'm turboed I'll go after the new Camaro Z28 & Camaro SS.

i have 5k saved up, but most if not all will be going towards college .... i had hoped to get my camaro in the 300HP range, but it now looks like that is 6-10 years off...

so u can already run a 98+ ls1 camaro? sounds like it

Agreed, cam, exhaust, headers, maybe gears(depending on car model), and some suspension. Weight reduction is always good too.
