    Re: 3.4 dohc vs 3.8

    3.4L-160HP/200ft/lbs
    3.8L-200HP/225ft/lbs

if you want performance, it will be easier/cheaper to mod the 3.8L

get someone else to explain all the differences lol

not the 3.4 in our cars the 3.4 dohc in the older gtps and z34s was rated at like 215 hp and 215 tq

ohh.... well i would still opt for the extra tq and slightly less hp. i dont really know anything about those 3.4L but i still think it would be easier/cheaper for to find parts for a 3.8L but idk really

There's a March 1998 Motor Trend article on this, I think that's the issue #

GM's 3.4 twister vs. 3.8 torquer both V6 and the Torquer V6 won. I will look for that article.

for that low of power, it must have been a crappy DOHC engine

OHC engines should flow way better and have way more HP potential than pushrod engines.. if it can hardly beat the 3.8.. im willing to say its not worth it

^you would think, but arent the 3.8 in 99- stangs and 4.0 in 05+ DOHC??? and they produce about the same power

It seems like every manufacturer out there can build an engine that has way more power than the equivalent-sized GM engine. But on the other hand it seems the GM engines can take a lot more abuse.

These motors were put into FWD cars and thats the most power the auto
trans could handle reliably at that time.

                  Here's a good article on the 3.4.

I know that the 4.0 in 05+ is a SOHC, I would guess that the 3.8 in 99-04 had a SOHC also.

They are push rods. This is the Ford engine used in Ford Ranger trucks.

The old 3.8 engine series II RWD was conceived in '95 and it went into the Fbody by late 95. So it is an old drivetrain compare to what's out there now. Think for a moment. Very few DOHC V6 on those days made 200hp and 225 tq. Most of them average out to 170-180hp and 130-150 tq. Only Nissan Maximas were more powerful. This is in reference to practical cars ofcourse.

Buick's 3.8 was never updated because GM was phasing them out for a more practical 3.6 DOHC. Which took quite some time to beat the old 3.8.

but never updated in the f-body if thts wht u mean

also in '95 the 4.6L mustang only produced 215HP

Yes, that's what I mean. But even a series III wasn't any major update or a serious gain in HP or TQ. It was used primarily on Grand Prix. Forgot to mention about the 3.9 V6.
