  • advise on my cam set up

I have been reading, researching, and looking at several diff cams and I think i have selected the correct set up for my application.

My current mods are pace setter headers, catco hi flow cat, borla xr-1, slp lid with intake, zexel posi with 3.73, 160 thermostat, msd wires n plugs.

This is the set up I'm going with:

    ARH Naturally Aspirated cam
    -210/220 @ .050
-.320" lobe lift on the intake, .512 with a 1.6 rocker ratio
-.320 lobe lift on the exhaust, .512 with a 1.6 rocker ratio
    -112 lobe separation

    CompCams 105# Valve Springs
    CompCams Steel Retainers
    CompCams 7.05" pushrods
    CompCams lifter

Does anyone know a price range of just mild pnp of heads and intake?

I just want some advice/ constructive criticism before I make the purchase.

The cam set up alone is around $930 bucks, but if i go for pnp heads/intake it'll be way more. I have saved up 2k for this project but everynow and then i'm wondering if its worth it lol.

    Please give me your opinions.

Do you have the specs for the HR12? The HR10 you have listed is a small cam. You would need a bigger cam to be happy with it unless you are increasing the rocker arm ratio. My advise to you would be to get on ZZPerformance: read their tech articles and price the head upgrades.

        update-

i just checked abbot racing heads site and decided I want to go with this cam instead:
        ARH Naturally Aspirated cam
        -210/220 @ .050
-.320" lobe lift on the intake, .512 with a 1.6 rocker ratio
-.320 lobe lift on the exhaust, .512 with a 1.6 rocker ratio
        -112 lobe separation

        -also changing to steel retainers

^ good choice. that's my top pick for when i get my h/c project underway.

also, look into the gt2 and see what you think.

I think you will be a lot happier with that cam. The computer worked out great BTW.

I have that cam and I am quite happy with it...but I can't speak for the other cams since I have not driven a car with them...

techsan23- great to hear you like the laptop! i was worried since i did not hear back from u

baller- i will look at the gt2, but don't they throw codes?

letzride- could you possibly send me a idle clip?

is there any other areas i could cut back to save $?

i really want to change the lifter, my car is at 129k, might as well make it as good as possible while im there.

also switched to steel retainers, cut like 100 bucks off from titanium.

                thanks alot guys

Re: advise on my cam set up

I'm running the GT2 cam on stock internals (about to hit 60K on this motor and no problems yet *knock on wood*). My car put down 235/232 on a mustang dyno, and that's will full boltons and a tune. The Abbott Racing NA cam is abit meaner, and I've seen #'s closer to 240, even 250 put down with it. If you're looking to save on cash, the GT2 is something to look into, since it is compatible with stock internals. If you're looking for the most power from stock heads, Abbott's cam is one of the top competitors from what I hear.

As for codes, almost any cam worth doing is going to throw a code.....And tuning is necessary to see the full effect; I ran my GT2 on a stock tune for nearly a year with no side effects except not unleashing it's full potential.

wow. should i try and wait to get a lower mile engine? I kinda feel worried throwing 2k into an engine thats too old.

will HP tuners be able to proper tune the cam? or do I need to hit a dyno and have the guys there do it? thx

I'm going to get my car dynoed, here soon N/A with the VS cam, just to see what N/A #'s it is putting down. Which I think they are up they since it runs pretty healthy with a good amount of timing and good tune. Just need to fix my IGN. this week and I'll see if I can get a run in next week.

I ran my GT2 on my original motor for nearly 20K miles (from 97K to 116K). I then spun a bearing, but I wouldn't blame that on the cam. If you want, you can throw it in this block and just freshen up with new OEM stuff. That might be abit cheaper then buying performance parts......

As for tuning, HPT will work fine. Just make sure you get a wideband to go with it :)
