his problem is most likely a valve problem, and not a connecting rod that has snapped in half....
Your right, his problem is probably a valve.

But in SOME cases, if the rod big end bearing goes bad, it CAN have enough play in it to smack the head / spark plug.

It happens with small engines alot, especially snowmobiles from what Ive seen.

seriously, almost everything you have said in this thread is bad advise

thanks, now im not the only one that sees it...

back to the matter at hand, i dont think its a completely broken valve, maybe chipped, and ate up the piston. im going for broken skirt.

I didn't want to start anything with the bearing, But did you degree the cam when installed, or just put it in straight up, I bet the piston has wack the hell out of the head.

^ If you were just swapping timing chains then that would be alright, but when you install the cam you have to measure the degrees on it , should come with a spec sheet on how far to advance or degree the timing, because the cam has alot more lift than stock cam. But I hope it didn't mess it up too bad, good luck.

Degreeing a cam is not always required all he did was install the cam straight up that would have not caused any damage as long as cyl #1 was at top dead center and he made sure to not the position of the timing set etc... I am gonna go with a foreign object in the cyl or a broken valve...

If you don't degree the cam you don't know how much advanced or degreed it is. Since the journals on the cam are going to cause more lift than the stock. That plug looks like it was hit by the piston. I would never install a cam without degreeing it, just looking for trouble later on.

you should always degree a cam I agree....but when I degreed mine everything seemed to check out I didnt need to change anything...?

most cams that come from a reputable place will be perfect and will need no degreeing

degreeing camshaft is mostly used in high performance apps to get more power or a different torque curve

The cam has nothing to do with the piston hitting the
                          sparkplug. ASSuming thats what happened.

Another question for the OP. When you pulled the plugs
out and turned the motor over, did any coolant come
out of the spark plug holes?

it does if the cam was in the wrong position and the valve hit the piston and broke....he installed a bigger cam

Thats what I'm saying , thats why people should degree a bigger cam, I would even do it with a stock cam , why take the risk of blowing up something when you can buy the tools for like $80 and do the work right the first time. I don't maybe it just they way I look at things when doing stuff.
